Schooling Question??

After many years of being a self taught welder I deciced to take a class. They explained that I should start from the begaining no matter what experience I have had. Ok i get it, no problem. The class is split into 4 sessions about 6 weeks each at $300. First half is mig / stick last half is tig. My question is that after about 10 wks, all we have done is stick coupons together. Is this normal? I guess I was looking for more. Maybe instruction in welding different types of metals or atleast different thicknesses. Before I pasy for the second half, I just wanted to compare my expereience. Do any schools offer training in fabrication? Reply:I spent a year penned up in an Arc booth boiling stick rods. I gained a healthy or unhealthy hatred of shtick welding. But it really opened up my eyes to the value of mig and tig. Yeah 10 weeks is a bit much if your focus is mig and tig. Reply:Will you end up with any certifications from these classes or anything like that? Or is this literally a class that just teaches you welding basics?I'm currently going for my associates of science in welding at community college. I've gotten almost all of the math/science and other electives out of the way already from when I had a different major, just need to take the actual welding specific courses.I can tell you that with the first classes (wld101 and wld102), it is all stick, with 7018 and 6010; and a very small portion of oxy acetylene cutting. Thats it for like 20 weeks, but at the end, we get to take stick certification, then ill get to move on to more cutting/brazing/mig/tig classes down the line.
Reply:At first they just teach you how to make good welds. Then later you learn more advanced stuff.Its geared more for a noob to learn how to make good fillet welds and stuff in all positions. Wait til you get to open route butt joints. Its like hitting a brick wall! Or overhead tee joints, its a pain to get em right.
