ok so how do most of you pipe welders run your roots in pipe ? Im a red seal welder but I don't do the whole pressure pipe thing often. I work in a job shop so im at everything and anything from cast aluminum, to water pipes, welding on heavy equipment and sometimes pressure pipe. I was just messing around with some 2 1/2 inch sch 40 pipe running roots and have found a tighter gap vs looser gap gives better penetration. I went from a 1/8 gap and land to a 3/32 gap with 1/8 land and have found I gett better penetration, more of a ring around inside of the pipe. This is with 1/8 6010/11 and vert up not down on a 68-72 sa 200..... Could probably switch to 3/32 for the root on such thin pipe it wants to overheat.... Also I have noticed some of my 5p+ has started to go white, why is this ? they're not in an oven no need for that. I have my ASME ticket I can make my roots pass xray easy enough just would like to get nice consistant bead inside...Journeyman / Red Seal Welder (What a useless test)Miller CST 280Miller XMT 350Miller 12vs XtremeEvolution Evo 28 mag drillEvolution 380 Dry Cut saw

Reply:Oh I forgot, reason your 6010s are turning white. They may be drying out. Dip them in water and let air dry for a day or two.Dont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:I don't hardly ever run 6010, so they dry out on me. When the wife heads to town, I grab a couple hands full and lay them in the kitchen sink. Run enough water in the sink to cover the rods. Roll them around a bit, then take them back to the shop and spread them out on my burning table for a couple days. Good as new, no finger nailing or burning off to one side.Dont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:Self-cleaning ovens work nicely for drying 7018s. Wife comes home to a nice clean oven. "Look what I did for you, honey!"A few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:Seeing a lot of STT Mig welding on root in my area here lately. Vessel Shops and in the Power Industry.Fronius supposedly has a better machine than the Lincoln STT, but I haven't seen one in action yet. Supposed to be getting a demo model in in a couple of months.
