I and a sculptor and occasionally work in steel. I have been arc welding with an old stick machine for 25 years and am looking to upgrade to a MIG. I rarely use any thing heavier than 3/4 plate and usually I am in the 3/8 range. I work in both regular and stainless steel. I am looking for suggestions regarding choosing a good MIG machine to fit my needs. I have plenty of power and don't need a high duty cycle machine. Guess I am looking for suggestions regarding a good compact reliable machine for either flux core or gas operation. I am willing to pay up for a performance/dependable machine. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Reply:3/8" to 3/4" puts you up in the 250 amp class migs if you do this regularly. A Miller 250/251/252 would fit the bill , so would a larger industrial power source and wire feeder like an XMT 304 with feeder..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
