I know I have a soldering iron… somewhere. Which box of the 50 or so we packed it into when we started going through the bowels of our basement would be anyone’s guess.  I haven’t done any stained glass work in years so I don’t recall what brand it was but… I think it started with a W. Assuming I won’t be able to locate it and even if I could the iron I have might not work for soldering anything but lead came and copper foil…. which soldering iron brands and what features should I be on the look-out for at garage sales and on Craigslist? A coin bowl…Not my photo.----A key ball… Not my photo. ----I have a boatload of keys both brass and some sort of a silvery looking pot metal. I was planning on sorting out the keys and trying my hand at making a brass key bowl for a neighbor who gifted me the majority of my key stash.  I feel comfortable enough brazing the keys together but not so sure about how to go about doing that in the shape of a ball or bowl that they could use for decoration on their patio or kitchen table. I’d really like to avoid using anything from my kitchen as a form and don’t have a pile of sand anywhere. --If anyone’s done anything like a bowl or a ball…. could you talk me through how you did it please. Photos would be very much appreciated.MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Reply:Hey,The soldering iron you want is the one you have for stained glass, made by weller, you might find one on cl. I have found it will take a lot of heat for keys. The silver keys are probably plated brass. I have found that a small acetyline torch, like the one a commercial plumber might use would probably work better.RegardsDave

Reply:What you Really want to find is your old Solder! I can't Believe how expensive 50/50 has become...
Reply:If you think that is pricy, price out even minimal content silver solder. I hear you on the 50/50 though. I have 3 or 4 rolls horded for "emergencies". I won't even buy tin based solder. I melted all that I had for bullets years ago.I'll see if I can't dig out my medium or large Weller irons and shoot picts for you. Big irons like this don't come up too often though, mostly just small guns for doing electronics. I have found a fair number of the old irons they used to heat on a gas stove.  you'll need some sort of heat source like a small propane camp stove though.I'll also shoot picts of my little air/acetylene, air/propane rigs. They get MUCH hotter than typical home owner torches, but they are not as nice as a small aircrafter OA rig or OA jewelers torch..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:A ronson torch would be a decent investment. Only ran me 30 something from the store, and it came with heat gun attachments as well as 3 soldering tips. A soldering gun wouldnt be a bad idea either, as they pt out a lot more than a standard 40 watt pencil tip soldering gun. If you dod decide to invest in a new one, get a good one. Not a unit you just plug in, but one with variable amps, etc.
Reply:The big old heavy gun looking types are awesome! I've got an old weller hidden away so well even I can't find it.. Sorta like yours! Lol I also have a 20-30 year old variable heat craftsman soldering gun that weighs about 5 pounds and is almost as loud as my old arc welder, but it will get to a bazillion degrees as fast as you can pull the trigger!! It's awesome and probably would go for about $20 at a yard sale. If it's heavy it's probably worth using.Real welders know how to penetrate!(Equipment)Whatever can be used to beat my opponent into submission!
Reply:Oh bother… I tried searching for how to actually make a bowl or sphere and came up with my own WW thread in the search results. Instructables doesn't even have any do it yourself instructions. From enlarging the bowl photos, I can see the coins were soldered on the underside. Makes sense.... wouldn't want the solder showing up on the inside of a bowl where it would be the most visible.   --It would appear when making these bowls that one goes at it one piece at a time. It's going to be interesting holding the pieces together while they're being soldered. I was hoping there was a product that would allow for tacking all the pieces in place at once so one could get a feel for how they went together so anything that didn't look quite right could be rearranged before it was soldered but.... guess not. --duaneb55> I have no wooden bowls unfortunately. Reply:In your thread on dissimilar metals, you link to an air acetylene turbo torch that you say you have. That's the same torch I use to solder copper pipe. I can get 1/2" copper hot enough to solder in seconds with that rig. With a large tip it might actually melt the zinc core in pennies almost as fast as the lead solder would melt.On a side note. I've used that same torch to heat and finish off small solid steel rivets, and it gets plenty hot enough to do light forging or bends on small stock like 1/4". Reply:With all the tools you have…. you better keep that t-shirt for yourself!!!!  I honestly think I’d buy a t-shirt that said that if I ever ran across one just for the fun of wearing it. Some of the kids are home and spotted my new big momma wood chipper and were out surveying what I've rammed in the garage and said it was official…. mom beat out dad in the tool department and laughed.--Speaking of “tools”…. I have to have a camera to help me “see”. Mine was stolen out of my purse last week when I was at WalMart scoping out the clearance aisle and picking up soda on sale. I honestly don’t know how that happened… I never felt a tug or anything and don’t recall being bumped by anyone but…. I had it when I went in and soon as I discovered it was gone I went to security only to find out most of their video cams weren’t functional…. I guess they’re just for “decoration”… ya know…. to make us feel “safe” while shopping. That’ll teach me for shopping there!!! Anywhooo…. I can’t use the high end Canons like what you’ve got any longer which is why I’ve been buying the PowerShots for about 5 years now but I know the menus are similar from the rebels we have. I’d just bought the SX50 point-and-click about a month ago to replace the SX40 that went to camera heaven after about 60k photos. Here’s what I bought that was ripped off, http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerSho...e-gardeners-20. Supposedly Best Buy is going to have it on sale this coming Friday for $329 so I’ll brave the crowds and go pick up a replacement and another 64GB card. Question for you or anyone else who uses Canons…. I was up to just over 600 photos on the other new camera…. you don’t by any chance know of any means by which to start the replacement SX50 out at where I left off so I’m not out of sync? I can’t see the menu to do anything in there but…. the kids will be home for the week and they can. Zip nadda nothing in the online manual about upping the image count from 0 to 604 so crossing my fingers and toes you might have a trick up your sleeve.MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Reply:Check the camera manual in the section about file numbering.  If you copy your last picture onto the memory card in the right directory (or rename/number the first pic you take), it might resume the sequence.  Page 205 of the SX50 HS manual mentions this.My older son's A60 Canon was stolen when my younger son took it to his junior prom.  That camera had been to Iraq and back.  Bummer.Last edited by Oldendum; 11-22-2014 at 09:16 AM."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:I LIKE the key ball!Would be really easy to make with proper form and welder's gas torch.Google up "steel hemisphere" in google images to locate various sizes of forms...You can use them to solder from inside-just rotate your work as you go. With proper torch head you can reach way inside almost completed ball.

Reply:If you want to do wht with pennies, you will want to  use the old ones that are pure copperThe new pennies are some sort of cheap zinc based with a copper wash coating.I don't know what year, but that's got to be easy to look up

Reply:Pre-1982 pennies were copper.  1983 and later are zinc.  Both were made in 1982.  There were a few 1983 pennies accidentally made with copper I understand."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
