I am considering buying a Thermodynamics Econopak 50 from a friend that has set in the shop for a while. I hooked it up and when you pull trigger the air will flow and the tip will spark a few times after trying it several times. I have been unable to get it to start cutting at all. Since I have no idea what I am doing with it could a bad electrode, tip or cup be causing this? Remember...I have never used a plasma cutter before.
Reply:Make sure the air pressure is correct. Also check to make sure there are no flashing lights on the front panel. Put in a new nozzle and electrode. Replace the swirl ring and start cartridge if that model torch uses those parts. Check connections to work clamp, grind a clean spot on the work for the clamp. Grind a clean spot where you want to start cutting. If it doesn't work after all that don't buy it. Chances are good that it will work after you do the above though.Miller EconotigCutmaster 38Yes ma'am, that IS a screwdriver in my pocket!
Reply:Are you holding it near the piece of metal when you pull the trigger?  The pilot arc starts (sparking you saw?) if you are nowhere near the metal, but the cutting arc won't form unless you are close (1/4") to the metal you will cut.Tim
Reply:I bought a new electrode and tip and it is working like a champ now. After comparing the electrode to the new one it looks like it was just worn down too much and I guess it doesn't take but a little bit to stop the whole machine. I also downloaded the manuals and bought extra supplies so I should be good to go for a while. Thanks all of the help!
