Howdy, I am repairing the floors in a 1946 Studebaker M5 and have built new floorpans and was going to MIG weld but have decided I need to learn to tig, any clues on nozzle size, Tunsten rod size and style, filler rod? Any and all help would be appreciated. I have a new Miller Diversion 180 machine if that helps.Last edited by oldguard; 05-29-2013 at 05:57 PM.Street Kings Motor Club est 1976http://www.streetkingsokla.com/HISTORY_1.htmlWaterloo Auto Parts IncEdmond OK
Reply:I'm all for you learning to Tig however , you should learn on some scrap, not turn your car into scrap. I also believe in the sink or swim method but you could make life pretty hard on yourself and seriously effect the finished product and not for the better.(Home)Miller Maxstar 152 (sold)MM211/spool gunLincoln AC 225C(Work)Dynasty 350Powcon 300STLincoln SP-175TWeldlodgic AWS150sWeldlodgic AWS300Custom Resistance seam weldersCambridge Vacuum EB weldersI smell something burning.
Reply:I recently built a stainless steel exhaust hood for our local kaiser. It was made out of 20 gauge.  I tiged and miged it. Unless you are a lot better than me(which would not take much) it will be easier to reduce warpage with mig. It is easy to get carried away with tig. My experience has been that anything less than 1/8" can get warpy real quick.

Reply:Originally Posted by zipzitI would recommend strongly that you read up on a tutorial from a pro.  Click HereVery helpful especially understanding that what you will be doing is a whole lot of spot welds.    Its a very long read, but well worth the time.  Not sure who MP&C is but he is a master...  Note: I think he starts off using MIG welds, but does talk about TIG welds at some point in the discussion.   Its all about NOT using TOO much heat! Reply:Mig is king for sheet metal. Alot of the control you'll have with tig will be eliminated because you won't be able to use a foot pedal in the positions you will assume.  Thumb wheels suck for control but can be made to work.  Scratch tig on steel with no remote amp controll will work, but you're gonna need to do multiple small segments to avoid warping, so you're gonna need to strike and break the arc often.   Your also gonna be out of position alot where hanging onto a filler rod and fitting it between the arc and the car interior may cause problems.  Borrow a mig.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:IMHO - TIG is not suited to that kind of work.  If you watch the Saturday Powerblock on SPIKE you see they never TIG weld sheet metal and they do a lot of sheet metal.  One exception was when they used a TIG torch to "BRAZE" and fill a rust hole using a brazing rod and flux just like you do with a torch.I am not an expert by any means but I have done lots of MIG sheet metal repairs on old cars."G"ConductorX - The Volkswright Shophttp://volkswright.blogspot.com/http://bugwerks.blogspot.com/Miller DVI w/Spoolgun - Miller Plasma Cutter
Reply:I have done my share of restorations using tig, mig, oxy welding with that said  , I strongly suggest that you use mig for your floor boards or other sections that won't be seen or need to be metal worked after. If you are not proficient with tig'n,you will get extremely frustrated...you will need perfect fitup, super clean metal with out rust pits, lead, galvanizing or any other coatings. On the other hand welding exterior panels that need to be metal worked, tig or oxy welding them is the only way to go. Mig creates a very hard weld and there's allot more weld buildup you need to grind of plus it shrinks and pulls the metal a little more or little less each time you "tack" it, this is what creates distortion than is impossible to work...Last edited by DemonSpeeder; 05-31-2013 at 02:18 AM.Lincoln pro mig 180Lincoln Square Wave Tig 300/wp 20/home built water cooler Victor, Purox, Harris, O/A welding/cutting setupsVintage Craftsman drill pressVintage Craftsman/Atlas 12"x 36'' lathe7''x 12'' w/c band saw Everlast 140 st
Reply:Well, I finally got around to tig welding on some scrap 18ga sheet metal and, well, it's like they say, it taste just like chicken!  I have always heard if you can gas weld ( I can) you can tig! Well, yes, kinda sorta, similar to gas welding with a throttle pedal! On the bench it was fairly easy but I can see the challenge on the car. A lot more time involved over the mig but definite advantages I can see right away.Street Kings Motor Club est 1976http://www.streetkingsokla.com/HISTORY_1.htmlWaterloo Auto Parts IncEdmond OK
Reply:I tig all day at work, on aircraft parts. I mig'ed my floor boards in.Tig for that type of work just isn't practical, make life easier on yourself whenever possible.
Reply:TIG is all the rage these days until it comes time to metal finish and then the boys all go nuts trying to file the ER70 filler.  If you are proficient with gas then just gas weld the floor panels in with RG45 and call it a day.  Skip weld around the patch and stretch the welds while they are still glowing.  We been doing it this way for about a century now for a reason.  The old mild steel body panels work nicely when gas welded.  MIG is next impossible to file and TIG is problematic as well.Oh well, what do I know, I have only been doing sheet metal work for 40 years so I guess I still have  a lot to learn.RogerOld, Tired, and GRUMPYSalesman will call, Batteries not included, Assembly is required, and FREE ADVICE IS WORTH EXACTLY WHAT YOU PAY FOR IT!Dial Arc 250HFThunderbolt 225 AC/DCAssorted A/O torches
