I have a friend with a wood splitter processing unit. The hydrailic oil gets hot after running for awhile and causes him to shut it down to cool. I was wondering if anyone here has ever made an oil cooler that might work for this application. It would be installed on the return line so there will  not be much for pressure on it. any help would be great, ThanksMiller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.

Reply:An aftermarket transmission oil cooler ? Summit Racing or similar.
Reply:Get a plate cooler. Tube coolers are marginal at best. This is what we've been using on trans and hydraulics:http://www.summitracing.com/parts/der-13750With this switch:http://www.summitracing.com/parts/der-35020/overview/Built in shroud, works well. Can take up to a -10 line with different adapters if needed.
Reply:Thanks for the repliesThis is a multiprocessor unit. The hydraulic pump runs several pieces of gear. A couple being hydraulic motors which drive transfer chains. The oil on a warm day will heat up to 180F which is where the manual says to shut it down and cool. Problem is that after reaching that temp, even after an hours cooling it does not take long before it reaches 180 again. The unit holds just over 25 gals of oil. I am looking for ideas that will increase my oil volume and add some cooling at the same time. This splitter doesn't have 12 volt power enough to run a fan so that idea is out.what I am thinking of is maybe a finned tube type cooler. Was thinking of using some 2" pipe as headers and 1" finned tube running between the headers. Make it large enough to hold atleast 5gals or more of oil. I have been looking all over the net and not finding much luck.Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.

Reply:Is this a new piece? Has it always ran hot? What does the manufacturer say about it?It may be creating excess heat, this could be from shearing the oil maybe blowing past rings in a cylinder or a bypass valve etc.....Tim Beeker.
Reply:180*F & shut it down?  Wow, for most oils, that is the working temp.I would be calling the manufacturer & verifying that requirement & see if they have a solution to cooling the rig down.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build

Reply:I would increase the reservoir size, more oil would cool it down.
Reply:From what I have been told, this is the normal for this machine. Because of how it was made it will generate heat and they recommend to shut it down when the oil temp reaches 180. Hydraulic oil can cause alot of problems if it gets hot and it shouldn't be allowed to get that hot. I will see if I can get some pic's. It is a new machine. Increasing the reservoir is what we want to do but do it in such away to help do some added cooling. I was hoping someone here may have done this.As to the budget. Not sure yet but I know we are hoping to keep the cost down as much as possibleThanks for the inputMiller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.
Reply:More oil has no cooling abilities in itself, it just takes longer to heat up a larger amount of oil. The bigger surface area of the bigger oil tank in contact with the surrounding air is the only thing that actually increases the cooling capacity. Some cooling fins welded on the tank (or added to any part of the system with descent flow through it) should probably do at least as much good, as long as there's some cool air moving past it.

Reply:Cooling Hydraulic oil has some parameters that need to be adhered to.  When you cool oil of any kind you raise the viscosity. That slows the oil flow in the cooler. The oil nearest to the cooler metal slows down so much that it impedes The cooling properties of the cooler. So coolers are generally designed to be oversized enough to take this into account. When I build hydraulic systems, I just put way oversized coolers on them . I also agree that flat plate coolers work well for hydraulic oil cooling.  The main problem with running oil very hot is that the pumps generally work much better with lower viscosity oil. Mac
