Hey guys im new to the forum and pretty much a newbie to welding. The little experience I have welding I have greatly enjoyed and after doing some research im wondering about a welding career. But how do I get in at this point? I am going to school for automotive technology management and not sure I want to give on this quite yet so is there anyway I could break into the industry and continue with schooling? is there a level I have to be at in order to become an apprentice? and areas I have to be in to find work? I'm from Denver Colorado but currently in Missouri south east of KC for school.
Reply:My advice would be to finish what you started with your management studies and spend some time researching and learning to weld on your own before you jump into another school or drop your existing plan. Don't decide to be a welder because you heard they make good money in North Dakota without doing some research. Watch some videos, see if any of your friends or family have a welder you could try out or pick one up at a garage sale or on CL. If that progresses and you decide to weld for a living you might look for schools near where you want to live. Sometimes the local schools can help with your job placement with local companies. If you decide to stay close to home in Denver you might look at Eastern Wyoming College. I've done a certification there and it appears they have a good program and nice facilities.
