I am making a dead man for my horizontal bandsaw. The 3 legs are 3/4" black pipe welded to a piece of 1018 with a .500" wall thickness. I plan to use 3/32" 7018 rod. What would you guys offer as advice before I begin welding? My thoughs are to concentrate more of my heat on the larger material. Reply:When ever I have to do something like this, I like to use a J motion. The long part of the J stays on the thicker material. The curl of the J bounces onto the thinner material. But what the he!! do I know, I've only been welding a few weeks.Dont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:I just decided to go for it on some practice pieces. I set the machine at 80 amps let it burn. I held the rod at about a 45 deg. Angle and did a slight up and down pattern spending more time on the bottom (thicker material) Attached ImagesBrianMiller Thunderbolt 225 AC/DCEverlast 255 EXT with water coolerH.F. 170 Mig/Flux welderKent 3h.p. 9x42 milling machineHome Built 2"x72" variable speed 2 h.p. belt grinderHome built 9" variable speed 2 h.p. disc grinder
