im welding casters on my welding table from Northern Tool http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...7826_200407826 and i think that 1/8" 7018's are too much for this what do you recommend
Reply:1/8" 6010 or 6011.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:I'd use 3/32 7018
Reply:1/8" rod is certainly way too heavy. I'd go with 3/32" at the very largest, possibly smaller depending on how you plan to mount the casters. As far as rod type, I'd use what ever rod you run best. It really makes no difference functionally in this case..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Is MIG an option? Regardless, a little heat goes a long ways on those little bearings. As do the spatter and slag.
Reply:Depending on the leg dimensions, you may consider bolting the casters to a plate and weld the plate to the angle. you could use 1/4 x 3'' or 4'' flat stock if it fits the casters. I think this would be easier welding thicker flat stock then the thinner caster material.
Reply:Or weld the casters to a short piece of angle iron (vertical) and bolt them on."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:Arctec 222 is an excellent rod for thinner material and has easy slag removal and very easy re striking capabilities. I would use 3/32".BIZ, Journeyman Welder, Mechanical Designer

Reply:6013 is a shallow penetrating rod works good on thin stuff.  Harbor Freight stocks it in 1/16.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:Don't weld the casters. That's what you do in an emergency in the field when there are no other options. The castor are usually galvanized and they have holes in them for bolts and they also have grease in the bearing and sometimes a plastic ring as well. Welding on them is not how you do a job right. As others mentioned above - make four plates the same size as the plate on the casters. Say 1/8" thick or maybe a little thicker up to 1/4" if you want. Then you mark the holes from the casters on your plates and center punch them. Drill them. Then you grind off the paint on your welding table legs about an inch or so around your welding area. Then tack the plates in place. Use 3/32" 6013, 3/32" 7014 or 1/16" 7018 or mig if you have that. The thinner the rod, the better.Check that everything looks right and everthing lines up correctly. Then weld some more on it. You don't have to weld all the way around it. You will just warp it from excessive heat. Two 1 inch welds will be more than enough on each leg. When you're done you remove the slag, brush it, wipe it off with some solvent and spray paint it. When it's dry you bolt on the casters. Job done right and it looks right too If a caster goes bad you just remove it and bolt in another one. The hole pattern is usually the same for the same size casters.Last edited by Pete.S.; 11-30-2014 at 07:31 PM.
Reply:Yes bolting it the way to go, but I would use Arctec 222 - 3/32", as this is an excellent rod for thinner material, spatter free and has easy slag removal for painted surfaces.BIZ, Journeyman Welder, Mechanical Designer
