77 miller?

I am a lincoln man well I have welded with a Lincoln mostly a Hobart a little and miller twice. A buddy of mine did some swapping and wound up with a miller 77 model I believe the serial number starts with HH is how I got that when I looked it up on the web. But anyways he don't have any use for a welder and he wants to swap it to me for an old car I have.  It has a redseal engine and an alternator on generator end as well as engine end it runs great but won't weld he said he was told the alternator on generator end is bad and for 60 bucks I can get one he has priced it. Does any miller fans know anything bout this machine and is it worth messing with? Is it a good machine? A problem machine? Can I sell it? How much it worth (ballpark)? It's all there in good shape doors and all. Or would it be hard to get rid of? I have a redseal on my Lincoln I can use the engine for parts for it if I need to.
Reply:It sounds like a Big 40 which uses a Continental F163 Red Seal, the same as mid 70's and later SA200's. For $60, tell him to get it running and then after seeing how it welds/runs consider trading for it. The Big 20's aren't as common and use a smaller Continental but I'm not sure if they have Red Seal on the manifold. Big 40's are a decent welder but not so much for pipeline. A 77 Big 40 in good shape is worth around $1000 give or take. They do have 3000 watt's AC power for tools but generally sell for less than SA200's.
Reply:my big 20 w/ a f163 welds nice.   i wouldn't sell it for a thousand.    It starts w/ an H, but not sure if its a double HH.    How many amps is the thing?
Reply:A Big 20 has a Y112 I think. The Big 40 has the F163. A big 40 is rated at 300 amps but goes up close to 400 amps. It's really hard to give a value on a machine without seeing or welding with it. The first H means the 70's, the second letter tells the year , HA is 1970, HH is 1977 and HF is 1975, etc.
Reply:It says 200 amp the faceplate is faded but i did pull that out it has like ATHCO 200 amp welder and generator is all I can pull out  and the serial number the machine is faded but no dents and doors and all is there. It's the same engine I have on my lincoln sa200 redface its a 4 cylinder purrs like a kitten  I just don't know much about the generator or if any miller collectors might would want it. So I was right on the year? If anything my lincoln needs a carb I can use it on mine I guess. I love welding I am 40 now but started welding in high school and loved it I do fences and brushing repair and build things like thumbs for backhoes and hog traps and weld up people's pumping units on the side. Just never had the self esteeme to get into welding with all the expierenced welders but friends with a lot and they say I'm good i ought to do it  think they just tell me that lol

Reply:If your seeing that 200 near the bottom of the plate, just to the right of the center, it was probably followed by" 100%", indicating that it supposed to be 100% duty cycle at 200 amps, and max output 300 amps.    If you see those numbers, I'd say it is a big 20.   Welder Daves guestimate on the what you could sell it for providing it welds, is proably pretty accurate.   I wouldn't sell mine for that, cuz, mine came from a factories maintnance dept. that shut down, they might have mainted it well.   The engine don't use to much oil, and it barely fits cross ways in the back of a standard size chevy pick up bed.   It welds pretty smooth, but that rear alt. you spoke of has been a problem for me also.    I'd think if you called miller, and gave them the serial number, they could confirm what it is.
