Reply:I don't know if my calculator will figure that high. I'll bet a person could take a real nice vacation if he had what they cost.
Reply:Holy smokes, Zap. Thanks for the picture, it was very theraputic for me. I couldn't begin to figure cost. How much do they weigh? Looks like another fun project.

Reply:They weigh 722.65908# each.(Diam in in.) squared X 2.670= weight in lbs. per foot(Diam in in.) squared X 0.2225 = weight in lbs. per inch
Reply:Well, a 1"x3"x10" section of SS weighs 102 lbs. That material is what - 513.13 cubic inches?30 goes into 513 about 17 times. 17 x 102lbs. = 1,734 lbs. ? Scrap 304 is at $3.30 per lb. Someone check my math, i'm beat!John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com

Reply:Pi(R)^2   3.14*(3.3125)^2=34.45in squared*74inches=2549.3inches cubed.   then 2549.3inches cubed*.283lbs/iches cubed  (inches cubed cancels out) so it =721.5lbs --Gol'
Reply:Okay we got the poundage, Maybe someone will take a stab at the dollarage now.I keep looking back at those sawhorses- they make me nervous sitting there like that.
Reply:It depends on where they came from, but if i had to guess, i say between 4500 to 5000 a shaft, unmachined.
Reply:That reminds me of some pictures a friend emailed me recently.  They were pictures of a guy that got killed when his clothes got caught up in something he was turning on a lathe.  It pulled him into the chuck, and the jaws pretty much beat his brains out.  It is one of the worst accidents I've ever seen.  Be careful and don't wear loose clothing when at the lathe.  My advice is short sleeves and no loose jacket.  It's a good argument to get the boss to keep it warm in the winter.

Reply:Volume of a cylinder is calculated by multiplying the square of the radius by pi then multiplying that result by the length using the same units of measure.Pi x r^2 x L = volumeUsing the Windblows XP calculator....Pi = 3.1415926535897932384626433832795The dimensions are given as 6.625inches in diameter x 74 inches long.So...Pi x (6.625 / 2) x L = VPi x 3.3125 x 74 = 2550.8996036370935988526399590187  cu in.According to www.onlinemetals.com a 12" x 12" x 0.25" 17-4 SS plate weighs 10.332#12 x 12 x 0.25 = 36 cu in10.332 / 36 cu in = 0.287 # / cu in0.287 x 2550.8996036370935988526399590187 = 732.10818624384586287070766823817 #So...  Each shaft weighs just a little over 732.1 pounds. 3 shafts on those wooden horses...  More than 2,196.3 lbs.I am not surprised the *new* Chebby 4X4 was unhappy delivering those shafts!Value in dollars?  I am not "plugged in" to the industrial steel market, so I can only use the tools at hand... Again referencing www.onlinemetals.com I find 6" rough machined round 17-4 SS is available for $562.07/ft.74" / 12 = 6.1 feet6.1 x $562.07 = $3466.10 per shaft, x 3 = $10,398.30I would suspect that there are suppliers who can provide much better pricing, but the point is those aren't chunks of scrap iron!  Last edited by Mondo; 05-03-2008 at 11:52 AM.Reason: correct a typo.Member, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.

Reply:Zap, the formulas I posted are out of the Lincoln "Proceduer Handbook of Arc Welding" and are for carbon steel. I don't know how much the density of stainless varies from carbon but I wouldn't think it would be much. I don't know where to find a table that would tell that either.
Reply:Rough turn and centerless grind is what I'd do. Generally material centers can supply material to pretty close dimensions.
Reply:stainless is indeed denser than carbon, according to the software we usestainless 300 series is 8.08 g/cm3and carbon is 7.86 g/cm3not doing the conversion.I always hated machining 17-4insert thoughtful quote from someone else2000 Thermal Arc 300GTSW 3.5 hours1946 Monarch 20 x 54 Lathe1998 Supermax 10x54 Mill2004 Haco Atlantic 1/2" Capacity Lasernot mine but i get to play with it

Reply:Do you think the customer got a good deal on some surplus? I would have just odered them in 6" O.D.
Reply:ooooohhh... my bad. i thought you wanted Weight... that's my good ol' thinking skills at work again. lol...according to our stock list at work, 3 bars @ 74" long and 6" diameter, 304 SS is $3,076.64. we don't have anything bigger than 6", so i couldn't tell you what the purchase price was of yours... my guess would be around $3,400Later,Andy
