Wow, that is FUN! Not nearly as loud as I had expected. I took a wild guess at the amp setting and used 235 amps with a round 3/16" carbon. It was easy to get a nice smooth "WHOOSH" after 1 or 2 passes, I had it down, nice and steady!! I only needed to see it work, now I have a new tool in the bag o' tricks. First pass, OH! City of L.A. Reply:not very loud?i dont know, 425 amps with 120 psi and 1/4" and larger carbons is loud enough for meonce you learn how to manipulate it in different ways you will never pick up a grinder to take another weld out again.
Reply:I have probably done more air-arcing than most of you COMBINED. So, i can say that it does NOT have to be real loud. A steady push ,while scarfing clean is not too loud. Even with a 5/8" carbon and 1000 amps . I even scarfed with an ancient Lincoln double ended generator 1200 amps. It had 2 -600 amp generators , one at each end , with the motor in the middle.[SIZE="5"Yardbird"

Reply:I have had mine for many years and use it all the time. Electrodes are cheap. I bought a plasma last year that will gouge, but I still prefer the arcair. I had to replace the radius rod mount on my daughters 93 F150. 3 hot rivets and one bolt on the frame. I burned the bolt out of the nut with the nut still intact. If I can find the nut in my shop, I will take a pic. I used 180 amps and a 1/8" electrode. I use that thing all the time.David Real world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I will answer to the noise: Set up 2-1000 amp Westinghouse machines in series and gougged with a 1" carbon, at a foundry and there was plenty of noise. JohnSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases. There all here. :
Reply:Once drew the job of washing out and rewelding a bunch of welded-in bearing mounts in the main gearbox of a Goodman Mining Machine used in a potash mine. I was using a 400 amp Lincoln and 175# of air. The gear box was almost 14' long so I had to crawl in and lay on my side. This was before hearing protection was even thought about. The safety department had to replace a lot of boxes of cotton in first aid kits. I was getting the cotton to plug my ears so I could stay in the gearbox with all that racket.
