I picked up a south bend lathe the other day and need to get some tooling for it. Where do you all order from? Also I'm a newb when it comes to tooling for a lathe so is there any special cutting bit I should buy? Thanks.
Reply:I have 2 SB 10" lathes and i made all that i use. Saves lots of money and i can make just what i need. I got my carbide toolholders from http://www.plastools.com This company http://www.arwarnerco.com/index.html has some good USA made HSS and carbide toolholders also. Look at my yahoo groups SB site for lots of cool info...Bob http://groups.yahoo.com/group/southbend10k/Bob WrightSalem, Ohio Birthplace of the Silver & Deming Drillhttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/southbend10k/http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sawking/1999 Miller MM185 w/ Miller 185 Spoolmate spoolgun

Reply:Mark thanks for the details. I will check that site. Merf23. I'm about 800 miles from the machine and didn't have time to get all the details before I left town. I will get pics etc when I get back in town next week. Thanks!
Reply:You didn't say what sort of toolholder you might have on the lathe. If you don't already have one, get an Aloris or clone. They have removable toolholders that are used to hold the tools. That makes it much easier to change tools while you are working. The toolholders come in various sizes such as AXA (1/2" square tools) BXA (5/8" square tools) and so on. It's also helpful to have a keyless chuck for your tailpiece. I have one that goes from 1/8" to 5/8". Some companies that are good sources for tooling are Enco, CDCO and , MSC. Good luck. |
