A crew os scheduled to work 4 ten hour days( monday thru thursday) plus overtime ( friday and saturday) as needed. A holiday falls during regular work week. Thursday in this case. How many hours of holiday pay should the crew be paid for the holiday? Ten hours, same as the regularly scheduled work day? Or eight hours? I'd like to hear your thoughts.Ranger 250 GXTSmith Gas Axe
Reply:They work 10 hours on a holiday, they make 10 hours holiday pay. Why would it be anything less?

Reply:Just to clarify the normal fourty hour week would be ten hours monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday. That is the minimum work week with possiblity of a three day weekend every week. If a holiday falls monday thru thursday is that a ten hour holiday or an eight hour holiday. Overtime only kicks in after fourty in this case.
Reply:My work is mon-thurs 4 ten hour days. 9hours Friday. Optional weekend OT. Any day Monday through Friday that we are given as a holiday is paid 8hrs regular pay. So if you work Monday through Thursday and Friday is a holiday. You get 48hrs at regular pay. Reply:usually it is 8 hours only. But you need to check with your state labor department. Believe it or not the rules are different in every state. Some states require you to pay OT for anytime over 8 hours per day and others only for time over 40. Likewise, the holiday rules are different too.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:8 he's pay and OT for hours over 40 worked . Usually a good week to work fewer hrs because you usually don't see the OT pay.

Reply:What? You meen you guys get paid for working the holidays? The last time I ever got fired from a job (pumping gas) was like 32 years ago. Minimum wage was $3.10/hr. I was still in hi school. The boss would have me come in on holidays for a ten hour day since no school. He only paid $1/hr on holidays. I called in Thanksgiving morning to tell him I would be in for half day. It wasnt worth a dollar an hour to go in early. When I showed up for a half day, the boss said, "you dont need to come back after today". I should have just left then.
Reply:Originally Posted by BistineauWhat I am getting at, is IF they work the holiday 10 hours, they should be getting 10 hours holiday pay. Not 8 holiday and 2 regular pay. Like 7A749 though, if they are off, then 10 hours regular pay, not 8, since that is their regular work schedule.
Reply:Originally Posted by GravelAgreed. Unfortunately, if they are off there are laws, contracts, and policies that will dictate whether they get paid for 8 or 10 if they are off. A friend of mine is an operator in a refinery and works 12 hour shifts. When he uses vacation time to be off it takes 1.5 days vacation time to get a shift off. I think this is a different scenario but I always found it odd that since all of his shifts are 12 hours they didn't get 12 hour days for vacation days.
Reply:Our contract will pay 8 hours holiday pay if you don't work. If you did work would get the hours you worked plus the 8 no matter how many you worked.  If you took the holiday off, you get the 8 hours holiday pay but that time does not go toward the 40 hours you need to get in to overtime pay.  You don't see many people working overtime during a holiday week.  If your scheduled work day falls on a Sunday it pays 1 1/2 rate for all hours. In my case none of this applies because I am salaried.  If I am scheduled for a holiday that's the way it is. (3 day rotation) They tell me the holiday compensation is built in to my salary...Dan D.Manipulator Of Metal

Reply:I work 4-10's.We switch up to 8hr days on holiday weeks and work 4-8's rather than 4-10's..The company will only pay us for an 8hr day regardless of our normal schedule. Bargained for work tho..

Reply:At my job, I get paid double time and a half for working the holiday (8 hours). Anything over 8 is still double time and a half. If i'm off, I get straight 8 hour pay for the holiday.Ya gotta spend money to make money!
Reply:Originally Posted by Broccoli1Assuming the crew is taking the holiday off and not working:Dunno about your state but here it would be 10hrs of Holiday pay for the day off but since they only really worked 30hrs of the 40 hour work week, OT still doesn't kick in until they actually work 10 more hours.

Holidays same (ot)Two union holidays a year (major meetings) I think was 3x time, plus, unless lives were in danger, union would not allow work on those two days, anyway.   "as I recall"-c-What is the sound of one knee jerking?

Reply:I have gotten double time and 1/2 for holidays for over forty years , and the number of holidays I had off you could count on your fingers.
Reply:Payroll sucks and I play by strict rules set out by the state- even when the employee asks for the "deal". Time off now, make up time later so their paycheck is the same. No can do because remember that dude you brought in to work for us? yeah, well he phooked it for ya'. Reply:My boss gives me 200hrs of paid time off per year. However, If I want Xmass off, guess where those hours come from.If I want to work Columbus day (or Xmass), I have key to the place and can work it.At the end of the year I get paid out any hours I didn't use (zero balance at January 1).So 10 days off, 5 days sick, 10 days vacation.  I think next year I'm in line for another 5 days/40hrs.Con Fuse!Miller Dynasty 350Millermatic 350P-Spoolmatic 30AMiller Multimatic 200Hypertherm PowerMax 1000G3Miller Maxstar 200DX
Reply:I've asked this a few times to the boss's, and am always given a stern "8".  I'm in HVAC service so technically we're supposed to be m-f 8 hour days, but that doesn't always happen.  I typically try to work 4 9 hour days and a half day on friday (or full day if needed), but there are some weeks I have my 40 in by wednesday.  It's too bad they can't average the last few weeks work days and give us those, but 8 is better than I got at the last couple companies I worked for.We get 5 paid holidays, 1 unpaid holiday a year.  No vacation time, but we do get a couple bucks an hour thrown into a bank account that's ours to do what ever we want with (1.5 and 2x goes into the vacation also if we're on OT).  I think if your normal work day is a 10 though, the holiday should cover the full shift... but that's why I'm a worker and not a boss I guess lol
Reply:Regarding the decision maker that was flexing his position.Companies never win in wage disputes like this.  They may think they do but the hidden costs will far outweigh the perceived savings.
Reply:Normally scheduled hours -  how many holiday pay hours you get. Normally scheduled for 10, get paid 10. Normally work 8 get paid 8. That's just in my experiance. Reply:Things work very differently here in Aus, we get 20 paid holiday days a year, 26 rostered days off a year, 10-13 paid public holidays a year (depending on which state), and ten paid sick days. 8 hours a day is normal time, hours 9-10 are paid 1 1/2, 10 or more are double time, saturday and sunday are double time, and if i work a public holiday i get 2 1/2 for all hours worked.Sent from my LG-P716 using Tapatalk
