stick rods for mild steel

what is a good brand of rods for mild steel? I have some Lincoln fleetweld 5p+ e6010 1/8 ". I got these rods at work. I'm a xray tech on natural gas pipelines. I tried these rods here at the farm and they are hard to get started. they seem to stick to easy. if they do stick and I don't get it broke free they will glow orange. so I turn the heat down and it doesn't help. what I'm I doing wrong? I have a miller bobcat 250 nt. I weld in all postions. I have no trouble running a 7018. I fact I like welding with the 7018 the best right now. but I want to get the 6010 down better.

Reply:If rods stick, usually the answer is to turn the amps UP, not down. Also 6010 is a DC rod and won't run at all well on AC. Reply:I find that a lot of the things I weld in a hurry on the farm are just too dirty to start with. I've got a couple die grinders, one with a cutoff disc and one with a small wire wheel that I use to get into tight spots. As DSW suggests, I would move the amps up, not down, when it's sticking. I'm no pro, but I've used a lot of different brands of rods and really haven't noticed a lot of difference as long as you are using the same metal content until it comes to hard surfacing.
