Who buys a BBQ smoker in November? Im not really sure, but hopefully someone will, lol.So anyway guys, here is the beginnings of my next BBQ project, that I'm really excited about. This will be my third one, and let me tell you, I really enjoy building these. There are a lot of different ways to build them, you can really get creative. And although they take a lot of time to construct, the cost of materials is relatively low. I expect to be in this one around $250-$300 when all is said and done.Im building it out of a boiler tank. I'm not too sure how thick it is, but its a beast. I don't doubt that it weights a couple hundred pounds by itself. I bought it off of Craigslist and they seller and myself couldn't even pick it up to load it, we had to use a backhoe just to get it in my truck. So, here in two of the build, I made it a nice heavy duty stand. I tigged some of it (Probably the biggest reason Im looking forward to Hobart is because I need help with my TIG stills), used 3/32" 7018 on most of it, and migged a few things here and there. It was fun tho...Anyway, here are the first two videos. The first is about the tank itself and the second is the building of the stand it sits on.Hope everyones having a good weekend, if you want to subscribe to this thread or check back on it later on I'll have more updates here soon [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeyQRfTPv9g[/ame][ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Le0GcmpqDus[/ame][Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. Reply:Yeah the last one cost you way too much in materials.
Reply:Lanse, you prolly know about this http://www.feldoncentral.com/bbqcalculator.htmlbut others following your build(s) might be interested. I may have even learned this link here? My hughes net service is to lame to watch your vid, but I'm going to build a rev flow mini out of 100# propane bottles this winter, and this site makes it easy to "do the math".

Reply:I usually don't like long you tube videos, but yours are able to hold my attention. I vote keep the long ones, since its more entertaining that 22 minutes of sitcom....I must have missed a slew of videos...... When did you get the Longevity? What happened o the Hyperherm?I like the hinges being put on before cutting the rest of the door...... Dang smart thinking....... I can tell that you have done a few of these......How much did that quarter in sheet cost? The place here probably would try to get $100 for it I imagine......I'm looking forward to seeing that gap getting welded up........looks like it is going take some patience........Nice work!Precision TIG 185 and MP 210Bobcat 225NTCutmaster 42O/A tanks.... 2 Argon tanks...... 2 C25 TanksFacebook...... Reply:Lanse, those "fast forward" sections of the videos are great. You can see the progress as needed and you show the detail work in regular speed. Good luck on the finished product.

Reply:Looking good so far. Can I suggest looking at www.thesmokering.com/forum/ There is a calculator on there for fire box opening size, stack size and RF plate height. It might save you some trial and error going forward. I built one from a 250 gal propane tank and it came out great using their numbers. Dan
Reply:I frequent thesmokering as well. Lot's of information. I know the calculator does come in handy.Lanse, the smoker looks good. Hope the firebox is large enough. I built a smoker in the past and that was the one thing I wish I would have made bigger. Thanks for the vids!Last edited by Stainless; 11-19-2012 at 06:15 PM.

Reply:I don't have time to watch all the videos right now (at work), but I definitely will later. I've watched a few of your videos before and compared to most "welding" videos on youtube, they're infinitely better. I found the warpage video, for example, quite useful. Some of the best hobbyist welder videos available.Keep it up!

Reply:Lanse,I really appreciate how you show most all the parts of the build, even the rote stuff like the plasma cutting and grinding (but sped up). It's pretty easy to find instruction on welding, but it's harder to find detailed examples of the fabrication process.
Reply:Working with round objects, pipe, tubing and end cap brings in a whole new set of challenges, as you are finding out. Like a lot of things that have to do with welding, fabricating and designing there is no substitute for experience. A little seems to go a long way when it comes to notching or coping when it comes to round. Thanks for the videos. I am planning a combo/smoker grill build this year myself.
Reply:Why are you using 6011? Wouldn't MIG be a lot faster and easier? Or do you just like stick welding that much?Strictly just curious.Millermatic 211PowerPlasma 50s

Reply:6011 is a good all around rod that will burn into about anything. I start kids out on 6011 because most of them will or have been using it on the farm anyways, you can run it in any position. Its hard to chip, but forgiving if your still learning ( I know I am). For cutting in for pipe connections, I have found it is always good to keep a small stub of the pipe to use for mock up ( a 3 inch piece works great). Set the piece on where you want to tie in, trace around it with some soapston- then cut on the outside of your line.Last edited by moparman68; 12-20-2012 at 10:58 AM.Some blue machinesSome red machineslots of heavy steel
