Sorry not a lot of welding in this project but I thought a few of you would like to see it. The basket for the coals and the ash pan are 14 ga. cut on the plasma table and rolled to fit. The baffle is 14 ga again cut with plasma. The drum has four 3/4" nipples around the bottom to adjust the airflow. It is all put together with stainless hardware and it works Awesome!!! Reply:ifallswelderReally good 'bare-bolts' design. The 'in and the out' is evident. What is: the type and weight of the fuel load, and ignition sequence?Opus
Reply:OpusHalf a bag of hardwood charcoal, about a half dozen chunks of Apple wood and a propane weed burner applied liberally to the basket before I set it in the barrel and put the baffle and rack in. I am thinking of adding a second rack for ribs. I let it burn the first time and did not shut it down at the end of the rib cook, it stayed over 200 degrees for about 12 hours!
Reply:These will burn long enough to cook a large brisket - 18-20 hours - if the charcoal basket is filled. Low & Slow cooks the best for brisket, pork butt, ribs & other meats that have enough fat in it.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build

Reply:My brother built his with simple flaps for air control, works great. I use it often (since it is at my house). I would think the cost of the brass ball valves would be prohibitive.I purchased a remote digital grilling thermometer at Walmart for $15. It works great too.Tim Beeker.
Reply:I'm having a heck of a time trying to find a barrel so I can make mine.Good job on the UDS and the ribs look good now lets see some brisket
Reply:Beautiful. The coal basket came out nice, not to mention the baby back ribs....and chicken...and rib slab.So just the 2 ball valves is what you have for air/heat flow control?I'm guessing you mounted the lower one up high so you wouldn't have to bend over for adjustment.Lincoln SA 200Esab Caddy 160Thermal Arc 201TSMiller Dialarc HFI don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around the courtroom....
Reply:Wow! Totally cool and awesome project! A lean and mean grilling machine. Great photos especially the ribs and chicken, yum yum! |
