So last Thursday thru Sunday I attended this years metal forging class at the local college. Last year they barely had enough students to run the class. This year they filled the 1st class and then filled a 2nd one they added. I was the only repeat for the 1st session, but I understand at least one person from last year signed up for the 2nd class that will run in 2 weeks. A few general picts to start off. Lets see if my crappy internet connection will stay up long enough to upload all the picts....Last edited by DSW; 07-16-2013 at 07:56 PM..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Looks really cool. I wish they had stuff around here like that. I bet it is a blast.
Reply:I've been so busy working that I really didn't have time to come up with any decent projects to work on this year. No big deal, the college just added a power hammer and a big screw press ( power hammer was installed the day before our class started) and the instructor brought some tool steel to work with so I worked on some tooling.I used a piece of 1 1/2" 4140 to forge a set hammer and then picked up a 2 1/4" piece of 4140 from my local supplier to make a flatter. A few picts of us working on the hammers.Me drawing down the set hammer on the power hammer.  I believe I either have the draw out tool or the flatter in my left hand in this pict. This was the 1st time I'd ever used a power hammer to do any forging. Definitely way better than beating on material this thick by hand.Instructor helping me punch the set hammer with the power hammer punch I made from a 1" chunk of H13 tool steel he brought.Fullering the 2 1/4" x 6" piece of steel in the screw press. I had to fabricate the fullering dies to fit the press to accomplish this.Drawing out the 2 1/4" steel on the power hammer. Between the 2 1/4" square 6" long chunk of tool steel and the 3/4" square bar handle, you got a real work out moving back and forth from the coal forge to the power hammer over and over again...Last edited by DSW; 07-16-2013 at 07:52 PM..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Interesting hammer!
Reply:Pict of some of the tooling we made for the new power hammer.  Draw out tool, flatter, and punch. We also made a cut off tool that isn't shown and the one guy was working on building a ball end swage, but didn't get it finished when I took this pict.A few picts of the flatter ( top 1st pict) and the set hammer I made.I didn't have time to run up to my supplier to grab any handles during the class, so I just winged it looking at the hammer eye on my forging hammer that I knew fit the handles they stock. I did pretty good shaping the eye punch by guess and memory. The new handles fit perfect with out any whittling at all. Eye punch was made from plain 1" mild steel pounded out on the power hammer and then finished up by hand once the rough shape was worked out. Reply:FYI.The power hammer is a KA75 power hammer made by Bob Bergman at the Postvillle Blacksmith shop in Blanchardville, Wi.Bob is a great blacksmith in his own right and has done a lot to keep the craft of blacksmithing growing over the years.Joe

Reply:There are a bunch of places around that offer classes. I've been tempted to take one at Peter's Valley in the Delaware Water Gap. I've also heard very good things about the school at Penland in NC.Thor, ABANA lists a few places that offer classes in Wa and Or. I can't remember which may or may not be near you, but take a look at the list at the bottom of the page linked and see if any might be close to where you are at.http://www.abana.org/resources/educa...20for%20Crafts.No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Since my wireless connection is cooperating right now, I'll post up some of the work the other studios did.First off the glass work. Apparently they did a lot of detailed study of medieval glass for the cathedral and Glencairn. The glass work in both are supposedly some of the closest "modern" examples to how the medieval glass windows were originally done and they are trying to keep the craft alive. .No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Last the stone work. Again all the original stone was quarried near by and cut by hand using tools made by the blacksmiths on site. They still maintain a full time stone mason on staff who does all their restoration and new work for the college and cathedral. All of these are done by the students, some who have never worked stone before this class..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear.
