I have a Thermal Dynamic PAK 50 plasma cutter (12 yeras old) and has "never been used or plugged in for that matter.Tried to use it last week, it won't "pilot", strike an arc, everything else is good. Took it to a authorized dealer repair and they said "it is a dead soldier'. He did not charge me anything as agreed , therefore he did not go into it extensively. The inside, everything looks brand new, the torch and cables all check out.I really need a good plasma cutter now that I am starting new business but hate to invest $2000 plus and this one is sitting there.ANY IDEAS PLEEEEEEEEEEASE!!!ThanksJohn
Reply:People will be glad to help how they can but do you have any info other than the remark the guy at the shop made?Yup
Reply:Are the points clean or full of junk?Do the lights come on?Do you get air when you pull the trigger? Do you get air when you put it on "setup"?Do you have it plugged in? DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:DavidAll of the above, all lights on, 70 psi, 20 seconds of air at setup, points clean and yes it has sufficient voltage (120 each leg=220volts) and ground is good!Guy at shop said it may have a bad board ,but the thing is new?Last edited by JOHN1; 06-22-2008 at 05:27 PM.
Reply:Were you using a tank of shop air or a air line from a compressor?Water in the line from condensation can cause shutdown.Check your filters. Also when you tried to initiate an arc was the tip close to the metal being cut?
Reply:Shop air, have 2 very good in line filters at the machine and yes close the work or even touching. The "points" have "arced" a couple of times but no pilot. It acts like a "mig" with a bad ground but I have checked the ground with ohmmeter annd has good ground. No corrosion in machine, again looks as if it came off showroom floor.John
Reply:Hi , this is my first post here so I hope this can be of some help . I had a TD 4xi cutter and for whatever reason , the only way that it would work was to loosen off the nozzle about 1/2 turn . If I did not do this , it would not form any arc at all . Once it was backed off about 1/2 turn , it was just fine .
Reply:Hi John,May be you should contact Thermal Dynamics customer service 603-298-5711, could it be a bad connection at the cable quick disconnect, and is it screwed in all the way, a fuse? There is a time delay, air will come on before the arc. We have a pak master 50 at work and have had no problems with it. Hope this helps. Post what you find out.Waldo |
