hey allany one know of or had any experience with a scroll bender that is capable of scrolling 1/2" square stock? seems like all the ones I find are not able to do material that bigthanks steveBTS Welding
Reply:That capacity is well within the limits of the Hossfeld bender and I'm 99% sure they make scroll dies that would handle the job.

Reply:I have one, but you cant afford it.  NO, really, I am serious, you cant.Its a Hebo, from Germany. And I just finished doing 600 scrolls made from 1/2" round stainless with it, up to 24" in diameter. It kicks ***, its CNC, and it cost as much as a new car.But is sure is cool.http://www.usahebo.com/I also have a hossfeld, and you are right, the hossfeld scroll die only does thin flat bar. But, you can do 3/8" square quite easily by hand, cold on a hossfeld, much quicker than hot with an anvil. Before I got the Hebo, I did a lot of scrolls on the hossfeld, and its not too tough, and you dont need fancy dies, either- I just use extra long 3/4" pins, and do it freehand on top of the frames. It takes a few minutes to get up to speed, checking against your drawings, but once you learn to pull about the same amount each time, you can knock em out pretty quickly.

Reply:Steve,   These benders aren't as fancy as Ries. But the first two websites are plans to build hossfeld type bender.  You can make your own scroll die.  Take a piece of heavy strap iron bend the scroll shape in it.  Then weld it to welding table bend your scroll around it.http://www.weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread...974#post112974LarryTry not use $10.00 worth of time on $.10 job!!Miller Bobcat
Reply:You can get a hf scroll bender and modify it.  I have done 1/4" with a modified scroll bender.  You could probably do 3/8" if the handle could take it.  The first turn is tough.  If you have many to do it will be tough.You could use the bender to make a pattern.Um, somebody posted pictures of a motorized scroll bender on this forum.this might help if you have to make a pattern.http://www.weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread...=scroll+golden

Reply:If you do, buy either a real hossfeld (about $800 with basic dies) http://www.hossfeldbender.com/or an American Bender ($775 for their number 2 package)http://www.americanbender.com/American is the only REAL clone, where every die is interchangeable. The quality on the Americans are very good, the guys are great to deal with, and they will sell direct, where hossfeld only sells thru distributors. American makes a basic range of tooling- but for the esoteric stuff, like edge bending flat bar the hard way, or bending cap rail for railings, or 3" emt, you gotta buy dies from hossfeld. They have room after room full of wooden patterns to make cast iron dies to fit hundreds of profiles of metal.Dont buy any other bender but one of these two, or you will be sorry. The shop outfitters is only a couple hundred bucks cheaper, and 1/4 the machine at best. The chinese stuff is a joke, compared to a real hossfeld. If all you want to bend is tubing and pipe, then the JD2, which is a modification of the hossfeld design, is the best, better than hossfeld- but it wont do the other 500 things a hossfeld will do. http://www.jd2.com/
