why are cold saws so much moneygrizzy has one for $1046.50 g0665you think its any good and will the blade last longer than a band saw on steel Attached Images
Reply:depends on what your cutting? typically for the same money you can get more capacity in a horizontal bandsaw i have never been happy with any of the cold saws i used . I imagine its from the user more than the machine, but i like the adjustable downfeed on a bandsaw as opposed to pulling on a coldsawinsert thoughtful quote from someone else2000 Thermal Arc 300GTSW 3.5 hours1946 Monarch 20 x 54 Lathe1998 Supermax 10x54 Mill2004 Haco Atlantic 1/2" Capacity Lasernot mine but i get to play with it
Reply:I sold my cold saw and got a good bandsaw.Cold saws do beautiful cuts. Band saws are more economic to run and as chenry pointed out you get a bigger capacity cut.A good guess is better than a bad measurement
Reply:I have a cold saw and 4 bandsaws- and I use em for different things. A bandsaw is great for unattended, bulk cutting, for cutting odd alloys, and I use mine daily. But a coldsaw is actually faster on big stuff- my coldsaw will cut 2" solid square in about 1/4 the time of my fastest bandsaw, and it will do it straighter as well. I like my coldsaw better for hollow stuff, like pipe and tube, which tend to make a bandsaw blade wander more, and are easier to break teeth on a bandsaw with.My coldsaw doesnt go slow enough to cut stainless, so I cut my stainless with a bandsaw.A good coldsaw needs to be very heavy, massive, and have a lot of torque, with a gear reducer to get the slow speed- mine weighs well over 500lbs, and has a 3hp 3phase motor. All this costs money. A bandsaw can be lighter weight, with simpler design elements- often just a motor and some pulleys- thats cheaper.I love my coldsaw, and wouldnt be without it, and for a lot of stuff, its way better than a bandsaw. But it did cost a bundle. Cold saw blades are resharpenable, so they last quite a while unless you mistreat em and crack em. Mine cost $150 each, and maybe $20 to sharpen, but can last years. My bandsaw wears out blades in a month or so, and they cost $20 each. (Bi Metal Lennox Diemasters)I think it depends on what you cut, how much of it, and how much money you have.Good bandsaws cost a lot too- a real industrial bandsaw, from Do-All or Amada, can easily cost ten grand. |
