We are having a disagreement in our office concerning a pipe welding job we are starting. We are using 1-1/2" sch 80 pipe with socket welded fittings. Pressure is 40 psi. Some say a 5F SMAW certification is all that is required. I say you need to be 6g SMAW certified! Who is right! Thanks....
Reply:Depends on the position you plan on welding the parts in... A 5F cert will cover you in subsequent positions but only fillet type welds. A 6G would be the smarter cert to go with because it covers ALL positions including groove and fillet type joints. Long as you're using the same process(s), filler, and parameter ranges according to the WPS which should be backed with a PQR.-HillbillyLast edited by Hillbilly2008; 12-17-2014 at 10:25 PM.
Reply:i may be wrong, but i think my 6g cert, only takes me down to 2" pipe or maybe, just maybe, just maybe 1.5" like i said, i don't know that for sure
Reply:I will assume you are working under ASME 31.1 or 31.3 and the applicable qualification code is ASME IX.If we are talking about welder qualification then a fillet test will be sufficient. However if you are talking about a procedure qualification then according to para. 202 (c) qualification for fillet welds shall be made on butt welds unless they are non-pressure containing welds (which is not your case)So to summarizewelder -> 5F test is sufficientprocedure -> butt weld test
