Some of you may already know this but railroad rails, cut into either 1/2' or 1' lengths and welded down or somehow otherwise fastened down make great anvils for a very low cost.

Reply:Greetings Patm1313,Yes they do make a nice anvil. I have a rail anvil that  someone put a lot of detail work into, it has a horn and all.You know Crawler may have posed a trick question about cutting rail.Good Luck
Reply:The pieces the crews leave behind are so smooth and straight it's almost eerie. The piece I have looks like they ground a grove in the top (maybe to eliminate the hard cap) then sliced it with a knife.
Reply:I just wanted to say this because as I was banging on a piece of wire the other day on top of my rail I realized how useful it actually is.
Reply:My "anvil" started as a piece if I beam that I added to as needs arose....including a small piece of rail.If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.

Reply:Originally Posted by crawlerI have some really old RR tracks that goes back to the early 1900.  Whoever had it before me said they tried to use a band saw, but it would not cut it without ruining the band saw blade.I'd like to be able to make a nice clean cut.

Reply:Pat, I like the rail idea. I'm just jealous, because I don't have a chunk of rail to flog! City of L.A. Reply:A length of railroad track can be useful to pound on but it will never replace a quality anvil.  The rail has a convex top.  You'll never flatten something by beating on a rounded-top track.  But I guess it's better than pounding it on your thigh.WeldingWeb forum--now more sophomoric banter than anything else!
