I got a Chicago Electric Heavy Duty O/A torch set (its a chinese victor clone). It is new, came with everything needed except the OA fuel bottles. When I connected everything together, I was not getting any Acetylene flow through the torch and narrowed it down to a faulty check valve. I figured this is a safety item and have not used the torch. I have a replacement coming, but I have some projects to take care ofCan I safely use the torch without the check valve in place? I might just go to the LWS shop (Airgas, in my case) and pick up a new one if it's absolutely necessary. Thanks!-JamesJames AHP 200X TIGMillerMatic 175DaytonaMIG 135Chinese O/A
Reply:id get rid of all of it and go get good stuff. i dont trust any of that cheap stuff when it comes to gases and regulator kind of things
Reply:Did you put the check valve on the wrong end of the hose?  Our shop teacher did that recently - I fixed it for him. He said he had a student do it...Dave J.Last edited by MinnesotaDave; 04-09-2013 at 09:33 PM.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.

Reply:There is a flow arrow on them normally.  But you can just blow through each end to see which way the flow works.Dave J.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:The 2 types are flash back arresters and check valves. One goes on the torch, the other goes on the regulator.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:I think that torch has built in combo flashback arrestors and check valves on the torch handle. But I'll say this, a torch that is f'd up out of the box gives me the heebey jeebeys.  I'm not a complete tool snob, but I'm with richT on torches - get something built by folks who know wtf they are doing before you find yourself with a ball of flame in your hands or a flashback.  Just not worth it ESPECIALLY if you're going to use it around your home. Oh and same with the regulators. If you stick with that kit, make double sure you stand to the side with the valve between you and the regulator when you open the valves and make sure you crack them open carefully every time.
Reply:I'd get a Smith Toughcut kit instead. US-made, reasonable price, and survived welding studen abuse well in the welding school where I ran the toolroom.I won't resell ChiCom torches on Ebay unless I render them unusable, then I include the corpse with non-fecal torches as an example.http://www.shopfloortalk.com/forums/...ad.php?t=31752
