Well, got a new addition to the shop on Saturday...a Dake No. 2 6-ton arbor press.  Great machine, but it needed a stand, so I made one.  I was up against a deadline as I'm heading off on a business trip tomorrow, so I still have to add the lower gussets and mount one of my vises on the open section.I also got around to restoring my little baby No. 001 Dake arbor press:--Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
Reply:Looks good. I have one that's very similar. I assume your bolting it to the floor?
Reply:yup, already is actually.  I'll lift the press off and un-bolt it to weld in the lower gussets and paint it.--Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
Reply:Fair and nice welds. Good job on that!PlasmaCam CNC cutterLathe and Band SawClamps
Reply:Here's the rest of the stand welded up and with the vise mounted:Should be solid enough with the lower gusseting in now.--Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow

Reply:Very nice Dake! Is it really 6 ton? My Dake doesn't seem much smaller and is only rated 1 3/4 ton.I received mine from my father in law (was his fathers). His father built a stand out of C-channel and a huge (I assume semi) drum brake at the bottom for weight. The drum brake (flipped dish side up) also serves as the die, punch, press tools holder which also adds to the weight. On the back side of the press is a baldor grinder. I love that press and use it very often! Original owners "manual".
Reply:Yup, your model is the 1 3/4c which is a 3 ton ratchet lever.  Mine is the No. 2 which is a 6 ton compound leverage model.  The 1 3/4c is 18-1/2" tall and the No. 2 is 26" tall, so there's a bit of a size difference.  Honestly, I'd love to get a No. 5 at some point which is rated to 15 tons and is a floor standing unit (however, it weighs 1800lbs and I'm sure even used it'd sell for a few thousand at least...I was able to get my No. 2 for $300 so it was a pretty good deal).--Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
Reply:Thats great to know, thank you! I as well would like to have or get a bigger one but I don't have much room. Great job on the no1!
Reply:I looked at a big floor model Dake last year at an auction. I forget the model now. I was tempted to bid on it but it was so hot that day that I didn't feel like waiting around for a few hours until they got down to that building. If I'd realized that the tonnage was bigger than I thought, I might have stayed. Most of the stuff was going to a few scrap dealers that were bidding..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:DSW, that was probably a really good find if you could have gotten it.  For future reference, the Dake No.5 cost new is almost $13,000.  They're well worth it if you can find them for a good price.  I've seen one for sale up here on CL and the seller wanted $5k for it...unfortunately way more than I was willing to pay, but I keep hope that one day I'll find one for less than a grand.--Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
