Reply:Wicked.  Sound track reminds me of Escape from New York.  Think:  Snake Pliskin.  Recall reading that Firth Rixson was recently acquired by Alcoa.  Have to verify this statement now....."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:Alcoa has recently acquired Firth Rixson.  In trying to find out more about them and what they make I came across this site with reviews from former employees.   It doesn't sound like all that good of place to work.http://www.indeed.com/cmp/Firth-Rixs...rclick=reviewc
Reply:So would I.Doing the best I can with what I got
Reply:A lot of grey hair in the video. This is from Firth Rixson in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, United Kingdom.http://www.storyingsheffield.com/sto...cant-arf-weld/This film was made by Shaun Bloodworth for our ‘Steel Stories’ project. It presents the large scale forging of special steels at Firth Rixson in Sheffield, and focuses on the skills of the men working at the River Don Works at Carbrook. The film features a soundtrack by The Black Dog.

Reply:We tend to be impressed on the "product" being forged and focus on the humans who masterfully instill life into these forgings.  I'm equally impressed by the humans who design/build the monster machines that build the machines that do the work.  B@dZZ!Last edited by ManoKai; 12-17-2014 at 02:22 PM."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:Originally Posted by HT2-4956forhire,I wondered about that too and went searching for some info.   Found this page containing a general overview of forging  http://thelibraryofmanufacturing.com/forging.htmlAbout half way down the page there's a paragraph about lubricants.   According to it....water, mineral oil, soap, sawdust, graphite, molybdenum disulfide and liquid glass are all lubricants used in modern forging techniques.
Reply:Looks to be bearing caps (the larger pieces), probably for marine piston rods."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:And you probably wouldn't want to spend a day in that plant, even an hour.  I used to haul coils to the stamping plants that made cans for Budweiser in Fort Collins.  It was a hot unpleasant place.  The noise was deafening.  But it paid.  It paid the men who worked there,, and it paid my salary on the truck."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:That's a pretty cool video, but what the hell does arf weld mean?
Reply:Originally Posted by NicheFabThanks for the link. A couple of us has the same question last night. Looked a little too heavy for sawdust, but yet a little too light for sand. I like what looked to be little cleaning tap the guy gives just before hits too.You could get some serious aggretion out on that little (relative) sit-down hammer! Whoever comes in with a $h1t mood that morning gets to work that machine!I think "arf" in Brittonese is "half".  "This bloak can't arf weld!".  Put a "mate" on the end for Aussian. All seriousness aside, did you notice how the floor shake transferred to the camera!  Daum!  And I wonder if half those guys (the ones without ear protection) need to learn sign language by the time they retire?  When I was a kid we toured a local air craft parts fabrication plant.  They were die forging aluminum spars and ribs I think on a relatively smaller hammer but I remember how the floor shook clear up to my guts!
Reply:I searched "arf welding" and didn't get any thing enlightening.  I think you might be on to something concerning the way the Brits tend to butcher the English language.   Hopefully our resident Brit (Gerry1964) will chime in and explain it to us.
Reply:"arf" is, was, and will always be........half"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Knew  it, because I like to read, but found some documentation of it for y'all http://www.zyra.org.uk/half.htm"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Check out zee Germans....If you think their forging press is big wait until you see their lathe. ...and Weldermike, try not to get too excited during the Playdoh demonstration.
Reply:^^^^ now that's some serious scale coming off that steel^^^^^^^^^  (about 2:30 min in)I scream like a prepubescent little girl when some hot scale comes off a glowing piece of steel on the anvil and gets stuck on the crease in my wrist.... Couldn't imagine getting blindsided by that stuff!!!  LolReal welders know how to penetrate!(Equipment)Whatever can be used to beat my opponent into submission!
Reply:Along about 5:22 in I though it was going to be a Viagra ad!
Reply:I worked next to a Firth rixon. We  leased a building and equipment they couldnt get to work. We made it work; electron beam stuf.  What they did, same as in video, there was no three or four guys doing the forging, it was only the guy on the fork lift doing the work.  They made these big titanium rings for jet engines. I have a piece of failed ring. I hear they are currently making rings for wind turbines.  We made some awful noises but they had two big vertical lathes (16 ft tall) that made a constant terrible noise 24/7. Most interesting to me was the lathes were taken from NAZI Germany after WWII. I think the NAZI's used the lathes to make the guns of Navarone. As far as I know, Firth is still there and so are the lathes.
