Hit the local sales on Sunday and grabbed a couple of little things including a Toyota clutch alignment tool which I needed for my resto. I paid $1 for that and the SK 7/16th wrench. The Y splitters were both had for $5 which I know are worth about $30 a piece at the welding shops. The treasure (I hope) was the Cooperheat TAU mini welder I got for $5. I saw it from a distance because it was a cool looking box. When I got to it a guy picked it up looked at it for a second and put it back down. I made my move and snatched it up. I can say I've never seen something like it bofore, and asked the seller what he wanted. He said he didn't know what it was for and shot out a price of $10. I knew it was going home with me, but decided to chop the price in half to see what he'd say. He said sold!!! Anyone know about these units? It does power up, but I haven't tried it out yet. Doesn't seem to be too much info on the web regarding it. I did see this link for Cooperheat http://www.teamindustrialservices.nl..._equipment.htm. The sem to sell some pretty high tech machines, but I'm still in the dark Attached Images
Reply:Just taking a SWAG on it, but my first guess is that it is some sort of spot welder, given the watt/second reference in the instructions pictured.  Neat looking though and for $5 I would have snagged it just to display in my living room as a conversation piece (this coming from a guy that has a restored metal lathe on his hearth.  AND people wonder why I am not married? )On the Y splitters?  I don't think they are for welding gasses.  Mine have male connections on the valve ends and a female fitting on the inlet.  For $5 a pair though, you did alright even if you just use them for shop air.RogerOld, Tired, and GRUMPYSalesman will call, Batteries not included, Assembly is required, and FREE ADVICE IS WORTH EXACTLY WHAT YOU PAY FOR IT!Dial Arc 250HFThunderbolt 225 AC/DCAssorted A/O torches

Reply:Originally Posted by 7A749Rog, I think those Y connectors are for inert gas. I have a box full of them. The male end is inert & connects to a flowmeter or regulator. The female ends are inert by the looks of it. I do have ones that are male ended as well. They look indentical to the ones I have anyways.
Reply:The TAU is for attaching thermocouple wires.  Cooperheat is part of Stork Technical Services.www.cooperheat.infoHere's a manual for a similar unit:  http://viaducttrading.com/wp-content...-110V-240V.pdf"USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:That's pretty interesting, did not know people put thermocouples on steel for welding.Dave J.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:mightn't the proper technical  term be Eency Weency  ? Just guessing, but it looks like a Thermocouple unit for sensing pre and post weld temperatures.TAU stands for Thermocouple Attachment UnitHey~!! It's a hobby. It's not supposed to make sense~!!
