Out in AZ on the Cali state line. Nothing special just some sleeves on a loaded line. It's 110 miles down dirt road and ROW. Nice and hot to 113. Hard to get good pics. It's always busy a$$ mode to get done. It's not as fun as tie ins and laying new pipe. But I get to see lots of open country.
Reply:Wow thats a lot of open country.   Looks like you have rigged up a shade.  Thanks for the photos.  I never new that kind of repair existed.  richey
Reply:Can't be fun working in that kind of heat.So what actually was wrong with the original pipe or was it the weld? How'd they find it, I'm assuming a pig rather than a leak, how do you get the product out of the joint area?......Mike
Reply:I will take the desert heat over the rainforests' any day.
Reply:Mrmikey. They find corrosion or other bad spots using a smart pig. Then it is excavated and evaluated with UT to determine how bad and if we will cut it out or sleeve it.  We don't evacuate the product .. Natural gas in this case. We weld to the carrier pipe while its flowing or shut in at a reduces pressure. Usually around 900 to 100 psi. Sometimes more. Kinda scary the first few times just don't think about punching a hole in it lol
Reply:When you think about it...your welding on a "BOMB".     It is scary!....I love that part of our country... Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada; New Jersey sucks.
Reply:Least you're in a dry heat"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Thanks for the reply, that just doesn't sound right in my mind LOL.If you were to burn thru, it would be a blowtorch wouldn't it?......Mike

Reply:No it won't blow it will blow itself out maybe burn once there is air with the gas in the ditch. Don't want to see it happen. It's not that scary todo. Just takes good lohi heat control. Flowing gas cools the weld. If there is to much flow it cools to quick. Causing cracking issues. I find hot cuts and tieins to be a lot more interesting than this. That's when it gets hot in the ditch.Last edited by specopswelder; 07-26-2013 at 01:20 AM.

Reply:Pretty cool SpecOps! I always enjoy your posts!  Man and I have some nerve complaining about the heat in NY I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:Not to sure on digging up the wrong part of the line. If they send a welder out there it is dug evaluated and a plan on sleeving or dropping a pup in is decided way before I get there.   It is amazing to me how accurate the smart pigs can be. Lolly gagging does happen. ..... Not often buy does increase with extreme temp changes such as 114+ or cold. Try to keep it to a minimum at all time though.
Reply:I work along the UPRR ROW as well as the Kinder Morgan, El Paso, and Southwest gas ROWS. I can never just drive by when a crew is welding. Reply:Finally out if az for a while. Just rolled into West Virginia for a few weeks of tie in work. About polar opposite of the kind of weather conditions I am used to. Have to pump the ditch dry. Ha ha.
Reply:Exactly what I was thinking lots off shock value and sizzle. Got lots of gloves for this job.  Ha ha. Got me a new stinger the other day and I must say it is the cats meow. Stinger V I think it's called  it is a rod holdin SOB. Even little baby 3/32. And it doesn't get real hot even running 3/16 lohi.  I will say worth every penny.  Kinda of topic but its my thread so oh well ha ha.
Reply:my dream job !!!!!Well it is wet and green very different for meLast is of my loaner rig. Taking me some getting used to that 200d. It made me look silly most for the day.Not me in the picture. Sniffing before we cut the test cap off and tie it back in. Was about 2 feet of water in the hole when we got there. Least they had some gravel and a water pump
Reply:Tying it all back into the mainline and header. Still have lots ofPups to drop tomorrow. It's 30  inch heavy wall. Attached Images

Reply:Start to the rain storm that flooded me out of the ditch today . picture is after about 2 min of rain. Rained for a couple hours and the water pumps down. Well off to get a beer and relax.
Reply:WOW Specops!  Talk about change - from the AZ to air so thick you can see it!  I did almost the same thing last month, from welding outside every day in Phoenix ... to this ... Kind of a working vacation!!!  ... no welding though ... Attached Images
Reply:Fab yours looks like a better change. Nice view. I may have to break away from work for a bit after this jobs done
Reply:You wouldn't happen to be around New Martinsville wv would you? I know there is a bunch of this work going on around here. I would love to break out!!Thanks,Chris
Reply:We are tying lines in on both sides of the Ohio river. Working in Kentucky and Ohio. Staying in Huntington. I know the work your talking about. Ill be gone by then I hope. We should be flowing gas Sunday. Head down to Texas. Odessa midland. Or Carlsbad and Hobbs New Mexico area. Lots of work to break out on and get your hand in it before your in the firing line. Oil and gas pipe.
Reply:I say this as working on lines with gas or around loaded ones doing tie-ins is a lot different than stringing pipe. Have to know how to handle gas. Set up air movers and how to work it hot . It ends up that way more than not as valves leak. Not saying you don't know but it isn't the place to learn unless you work with some one who is good and will help you out. They had a guy not test a line that was said to be clear. Lit up on a test cap and blew it 50 yards. 36 inch. Lucky know one was killed. Pm me if you have any questions and ill try to point ya in a direction
Reply:Thank you sir!! You have a pm!!Thanks,Chris
Reply:Interesting thread.  I've seen one (HPNG) line breach and ignite.  Amazing how hot it burns.  Turns earth into glass like cinders and the sound is well, not describable. Not for me.
