While trying to learn how to weld, I've been messing around with some simple art projects.  Things like metal roses, candleholders, etc.  The little bit of rod work I've done thus far has involved bending rods over whatever hard roughly circular objects I had handy in the garage, but I'd like to find a better way.I thought of making up a simple bending jig and wondered if this would be suitable for doing simple scrolls, bends, etc in 1/4 to 3/8 rod or relatively thin flat stock. My idea was to get a couple of pieces of 2x6 hardwood stacked together to make a 4x6 piece that is maybe 12 inches long.  Cover that rectangle with some sheet metal, then drill a pegboard style layout in it, so that you can position some metal pins in a bunch of locations, enabling you to bend a variety of different size curves.I figured I'd cover the wood with the sheet metal to resist heat from a torch, and that hardwood would stand up to heat better than something like pine.  Does this sound like something that would cover my needs for simple art project bending?
Reply:Nothing wrong with wood jigs.  However, if you are welding on them then the will burn even with metal on them.  I would use the fixture to form the metal then remove it for welding.   I have learned to make jigs heavy,  it sucks to get in the middle of a job and have a jig break or bend. You can find, use a variety of tubing and pipe for rolling rings and scrolls.  Making a collection. If you can get some 3/8 inch or thicker plate then you can do the peg board design too.

Reply:Whoa! That's a pretty sweet setup.  Doesn't look that hard to build, but I don't have any way to get those precision circles (without buying them from that guy  )Wouldn't be doing any welding directly on this, just bending by hand or maybe with a little torch heat to help with the thicker stuff.
Reply:Hi, Jstrain.I use some different size pipe welded to a small flat plate. Then weld an upside-down angle piece to slide the rod into and hold it. You can make some nice shapes very easy with that. Just clamp the flat to your bench and pull the rod around the pipe.Burt _____________________Miller Syncrowave 250Millermatic 211Miller 375 Plasma Cutter Hobart Handler 12010FtDrillBit.com

Reply:This might help with the layout.  http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...=scroll+layoutI don't understand the significance of his hole pattern from what he demonstrated.if making rings using tall pipe will allow you to make spirals.  Cut the spirals and get several repetitive rings.Last edited by tapwelder; 12-24-2014 at 10:06 AM.
Reply:ManoKai beat me to posting that bender up. I have that one and the versa jig from Yesteryear Forge that is similar. The Yesteryear Forge jig comes with a square to round adapter that also allows you to use 1/2" sockets as your bending form if need be. I've seen others in the past use similar home made jigs around different size sockets. Usually they have a heavy bar with a threaded hole drilled in it, then they sandwich the socket between the bar and a washer and bolt to hold it in place and have a 2nd hole drilled to locate the 2nd pin.For bigger material HF's compact bender can do much the same thing. I've made my own dies for my Compact bender using pipe of different sizes that I weld 2 straps across and drill a center pivot hole..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:@ tapwelder - cool thread, hadn't seen it previously.   Calling MN Dave....MN Dave........check out the Fibonacci spiral pattern "Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
