hey all, new to the forum.  Been welding on and off for about four years and didn't start having this problem until reciently.  Haven't been able to figure it out, but first this is what I'm using..200 AC amp arc welder, one of those $100 cheepies often seen on amazon or e-bay.  About 4 years old,  didn't start having this problem until reciently.US Forge 6011 1/8 rod.  Bought a new 1lb package to do a little welding, problem occured, bought another new package, problem not resolved. Now for the problem...Welder will be set around 80 amps(welding 3/16 plate)  arc starts fine but to substain the arc the electrode must remain in direct contact with the plate(no arc gap).  Any attempt to establish an arc gap and the arc will stop.  More amps doesn't help, just blows a hole through the plate.  All connections on the welder have been checked(ground, stinger, etc.)Now for the part that makes me confused.   It welds great with 3/32 6013.  Will weld ok once about 1/2 to 3/4 of the 1/8 6011 is used up.  Will act the same from the moment it's turned on to the moment it's turned off, no matter how many rods are used.Any help is appreciated.
Reply:Sound like the machine. Not enough current/voltage for a 1/8" rod.But why not make another test? Turn the 6011 around. Remove a bit of the coating so you can insert it into the holder. Cut off the uncoated side of the rod and try to weld with it. If it works you know there is something wrong with the coating in the batch of rods you have bought.
Reply:Now why didn't I think of that?  Be back soon...
Reply:Flipping the rod around seems to help.  With it flipped I can usually use the whole rod without too much trouble, I just get some sputtering towards the end.  Might try getting some rod from a different store.  Right now I think my biggest problem is that I haven't welded stick for about a year and a half and I wasn't very good at it then.
Reply:9 times out of 10 it's all operator error....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Yeah, test with some from another brand. I'm not familiar with the US Froge brand, maybe it's good.Once I bought a box of cheap rods just to try them out. Well, first thing I noticed was that I had to turn up the current a lot. I measured the steel rod and it turns out that it's a much thicker rod than the label. It was behaving strangly and when I take a closer look at the coating I notice that the steel rod inside the electrode is not centered at all. On one side there is almost no coating. To top it off the smoke from the electrode was thick and nasty compared to my usual brand rods. I ended up returning the box of rods I bought and since then I only buy brand name stuff. You get what you pay for (most of the time). It sure sound like the rods you got have some problem with the coating.Last edited by Pete.S.; 04-25-2013 at 04:28 PM.
Reply:why not try baking the rods to dry them out.   I'd do that before I gave up on them.Hey~!! It's a hobby. It's not supposed to make sense~!!

Reply:I just picked up some rod from the local napa.  As for as I know, napa and the local hardware store are the only two places that sell rod in the little town I live in.  US Forge is all the hardware store sells.Napa didn't have any 6011  ended up getting 6013 1/8 Firepower, which is made by Thermadyne which I understand is now Victor Technologies.   I've never heard of any of them, but then again my background knowledge on welding companies is pretty limited.  At $3.70 for a pound, I was apprehensive about getting it.  But it burnt awesome.  From my understanding 6013 is a little more forgiving and has less penetration that 6011?
Reply:Dont waist your money on cheap welding rod. You save some pennies but you suffer with it's performance. I buy only quality rod at my local welding supply stores, Stay away from welding rod sold at hardware stores or big box stores. While your welding machine is not a stellar performer neither, it should run any quality 6013, 6011 and 7014 rod.6013 is a light penetrating drag rod with a heavy thick flux. 6011 is a deep penetrating  whip rod with a thin light flux. They run nothing like each other.Last edited by snoeproe; 04-25-2013 at 11:26 PM.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:well I can tell you a 110 volt stick welders are  okay for repair work with 6013 but if u wanna learn how to weld get a real 230 volt ac/dc stick welder the Hobart stickmate lx it is the miller thunderbolt with a lower price tag also check out chucke2009 on youtube now that dude can weld
Reply:IMHO, 6013 is useless for anything except sheet metal. You'll get more strength out of wheat paste glue.
