Hello Everyone,I am not a journeyman welder....but recently I decided to do some test plates. I passed the flat, horizontal and vertical on my first try.I would like to try for overhead but I have never actually seen an overhead weld and wondered if someone could help me with some direction on doing the overhead cwb test.I believe the plate is tacked together the same as a flat plate? Can anyone describe where the starts and stops are. Also wondered how hot to run and correct rod position for this.Any help will be appreciated.Thank you very much.
Reply:About the same amps as flat. Approx 90 degree angle.Check out the overhead video: http://www.weldingtipsandtricks.com/...-overhead.htmlNot a plate test but will show you good information. Reply:it is the same plate as flat. you go 2/3of the way on the 90* side then 1/3 on the beveled side. then you get the test instructor to check your plate and he will tell you to continue (fill and cap it) or toss it out

Reply:Tie ins are the same as flat and vertical, 1.25 " from the sides of plate. I mark the backing strip with a chisel before I begin my test. Makes it easy to see the start/stop locations.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:Hello Guys,Thank you so much for all the replies. So it sounds like ( to oversimplify no doubt) that the over head is very similar to the flat but no doubt more difficult to control.Do I keep my rod position the same?Sounds like I Will be running around the same amps ( 120 probally)I am going to give it a shot tonight.
Reply:Root and fill 130Down to 125 for cap and last pass of cap @ 120Do my check test on Saturday and those are the amps my instructor advises to use. Works for me Tried the chisel mark today.
