I need some ideas for setting up a small shop.  I've got 900 sq ft of unfinished basement space to use.  The house already has very nice built in wall shelving and 220v hook ups.  My current tools that take up floor space are  10" table drill press, Floor Drill press, Two table saws, chop saw and cut off saw. Two welders Lincoln 250 and 175 and air compressor.  I have plenty of electrical hook ups already there.  Please give me ideas and pictures if you can I need to make it a efficient as possible.  Thanks
Reply:A basement?  If you are running anything except TIG you should invest in very good rubber seals on your door to the house and with any welding process a high flow air evacuation system.  Not to forget a fire extinguisher in case a spark hits the joists/insulation above your head.Fire, Smoke, Heavy Inert Gas are going to be hazardous.  That would be considered a confined space on a construction job even at 900sq/ft because it is enclosed on all sides. But i've TIG welded in my apartment, so i'm not saying don't go for it!
Reply:My hobby welding, grinding, cutting, drilling, and milling is mostly done out in the garage, with the doors open because of the smoke and sparks.  The basement is setup for woodworking.  For the way I use it, I need big 4'x8' tables for making furniture, but can get by with a workbench and small welding table in the garage for metalworking.
Reply:There are a couple of threads in the forum "Welding projects and pictures"Search for "lets see some pics of your shop"   and also another one called "Share you best organizing ideas"  Lots of ideas from everyone already in those two threads ...Washman
Reply:Hey steve,Here are a couple pics of my AL & steel storage setups and my spool racks I made to condense space. If you have 900 sq.ft. of work area, you have room to do some maneuvering with equip. & projects. You will see that your space will shrink and shrink and shrink.....then you'll really look for ways to condense and compact. Space in a home/shop environment is a premium you need to take advantage of. All the material on the (2) racks was material our company owner was going to leave at our previous location because we had to move locations and the new facility was 1/4th the size. When he said he couldn't take it, I growled I wasn't leaving my departments' material there. He said since we could only take the new bundled material,: "Bring in your trailer & get it out of here!!!!". I was there 3am the next morning and loaded my 5' X 8' trailer with 12" sides to the top and brought it home. Talk about an early Xmas present!!!! I estimated I got 8-$10,000 worth of material at today's prices. Anyway, I'll post a couple more ideas for you to consider for space-saving.....Denny Attached ImagesComplete Welding/Machine/Fab.
