I'm trying to learn how to TIG and was wondering how experienced welders would do this.Below is a picture of a bracket made from square tubing. It's 1 1/4" x 1 1/4" x 5/64" (14 Gauge).I've "saddled" the tubing so a 1" solid rod will fit. The project was to weld the 1" solid rod all the way around. The 1" rod is little more than 3 ft long and there is a second identical bracket attached to it as well. It's a kind of chin up bar.I've already done the welding but it was very hard and it wasn't purdy. What would be the best way to weld something like this? How would you tack it, position it and weld it for the best result? Attached Images
Reply:Set them up the required distance apart, square and bottom edge of the tubing flush to the edge of the table, clamp 'em down, drop the 1" rod in the cope, small tacks going from each piece and weld....Mike
Reply:Do like the first guy said but use a mig welder to weld it. I don't want to hurt your feelings but from the looks of the welds I bet you could do a nicer job with a mig welder. Also a mig welder might be a little easier to weld with and the heat signature will be much smaller.Good luck and have fun.Last edited by kctgb; 05-08-2013 at 04:33 PM.
Reply:I would have welded the joint first, then cut the saddle into it afterwards on the mill.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:design makes no sense. the solid bar couldve been tubing or pipe....put all the heat into the solid bar and let a little of the puddle wash over to he 14 ga..

Reply:Thanks for your comments!I didn't want to weld it with mig because then I wouldn't learn more about tig welding.   I chose to use a solid 1" round bar instead of tubing because the load is going to be at the unsupported end of the bar and there is going to be a bend as well. Professional gym equipment always uses solid bars in similar situations so it made sense to do the same. The bracket will be pulled down so the yield strength is more than needed even if it's only 14 gauge. There will be some shear forces as well where the bar is attached to the bracket but I hope it will be strong enough. When I'm done I'm going to put some weight on it to see things look.
Reply:sorry it seemed that this was like chinup bar..now there is an unsupported end...hence my confusionor do you mean the end in the middle?
