I'm building a culvert for the driveway into my one acre lot outside Nome, AK. I didn't want to spend $1800 or so on a "store bought" culvert and then pay freight to get it to Nome, so I decided to build it from piling cut-offs from our new power plant. I work for Nome Joint Utilities and personally cut all 141 pilings to elevation for the new plant. And now the pictures: Attached ImagesLincoln SA-200 code 4816Lincoln Power Mig 180cHobart Hefty CC/CV suitcase wire feederKoike Aronson IK-12 Beetle track burner
Reply:Not sure how to insert text between the pictures. The first three were the jig I built to line up the pieces of 20 inch by .500 wall pipe. Then the beveling. And here putting them together.Going to do all the root passes first, then go back and grind, fill and cap. Reply:I have been accused of over-building projects, but holy cow! Looks good. Should not have to worry about the ends getting smashed on that!

Reply:have you thought about a pressure test?
Reply:WOW!  I would have thought BBQ pits would have been a better use and the corrugated would last a long long time.  Heck, plastic corrugated will last a lifetime.  I have use jigs that were made with casters that were portable.  I never thought of ball rollers.  That would enable you to roll or move the pipe horizontally if pulled by a truck or pushed by a lever. You are the Tim Taylor of Culverts!!!
Reply:Ah, that must be stronger then the plastic ones too.

Reply:How are you getting it home and in place?  It looks like you have a couple of machines around that might help with that.
Reply:Snow cat ............. NICE! Now that would be fun to take a spin in.Magazines have issues, everything else has problems

Reply:I dunno... you sure it will be strong enough?  I mean... just three or four M1A2 Abrams tanks on top and it might start to sag!    It looks great.  I doubt the pipes under Chicago are that heavy duty.Hemi-T"Ignorance can be fixed, but stupid is forever."Hobart BetaMig 2510Everlast PowerPro 256 TigMiller Radiator-1 Tig cooler

Reply:The forum is slow to respond uploading photos, so I'll try again.Notice on the obligatory close up shot there is a quarter used for scale because everything is more expensive in Alaska  Attached ImagesLincoln SA-200 code 4816Lincoln Power Mig 180cHobart Hefty CC/CV suitcase wire feederKoike Aronson IK-12 Beetle track burner

Reply:Thats a great looking driveway pipe.  I have enjoyed watching your build. richeyThat pipe will outlast any other one for many years. You'll be able to drive some pretty havy equipment on it with no problem.
Reply:And now the final resting place for the culvert. You can barely see the ends, marked by the pvc pipe reflectors. Attached ImagesLincoln SA-200 code 4816Lincoln Power Mig 180cHobart Hefty CC/CV suitcase wire feederKoike Aronson IK-12 Beetle track burner
Reply:The driveway looks great. Did your igloo melt? Are you building a house or a shop on the lot?

Reply:Price doesn't sound horrible. That's only $10 / yd. I pay way more than that to get material delivered. Even guys looking to dispose of clean fill want to get paid at least to truck it to your place unless they are doing something like digging a pool down the street. Even then they still want you to pay to take their waste if they can.I want to say the last time  I priced stone they wanted like $30/ yd delivered plus the trucking fee for a full triaxle. If you got less than 1/2 a truck the price went up..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:When I built my garage I needed a lot of fill for the driveway.  My wife spotted a road crew nearby that was stripping the base gravel for a widening project.  We got about a dozen loads of clean crusher run delivered and graded for about $250."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:Lots of metal below that truck. When the kids whack down the PVC markers, weld some iron pipe to the top of the 2,000 pound culvert and slide the PVC over it. That will fix them.
Reply:Great build. Thanks for sharing.
Reply:I have enjoyed watching you build your pipe culvert.   I like the photos.  Ive never been to Alaska.   Good Job. richey
