Hey yall Im new to this place. Lemme give yall the basics.I been welding pipe for four years at my home shop and at my schools Agriculture program and my Uncle seen my welding skills and decided to offer me this proposition: He works as some form of overseer for Eagle for shale here in Texas and said that there are always welders on the rigs and he'd like to start up a business with me where he'd get me the jobs then i just go weld. I got no truck right now so he offered me his 2008 Dodge Megacab with a 5.7l Hemi in her and she's a srw 4x4. Now I appreciate the offer and all but one of my main questions is Can I get away with a srw gasser? and another thing is he wants for me to make a list of the tools I'll need, So far i got the basics: Welder(not sure if lincoln or miller, i only ever welded with miller 220's and a hobart gas for fixin ****) ,Oxy acetylene tanks with torch and rose bud, then i probably gonna want a carbon arch and then the only other thing i know are stands and misc wrenches. So if yall could help a youngn like myself get started Id greatly appreciate it. and if yall know anywhere or anyway i could get these here tools and such cheaper please let me know. Thank yall, Kotzur out.
Reply:Just a heads up it's the "Eagle Ford" shale instead of "Eagle for" shale.  The name comes from the town of Eagle Ford up near Dallas.Good luck in the venture.  Always nice to be appreciated.  Do you need any certs?

Reply:If the truck is free ,It will work!!.If your welding  pipe, what sizes ? you could use a pair of pipe bevelers  {H&M} or [Dearman, and like you said ,6 stands {summer folding} , pipe chain clamps  (Dearman) or cage clamps for the size pipe .  plus grinders (3 or 4) at least one 7", Wire wheels, grinding wheels , hammers, C clamps ,levels , files, some contour tools  . also maybe a 4' or 6' step ladder and a back board for laying under pipe . And when you said Carbon Arch ,I think you mean arc gouging torch( you need air for that)  Oh yes a come along, and a few choker straps . if there is climbing you need a fall harness,.As for your O/A you should have two sets of bottles ,only load the spare bottle when it looks like you will run out (so you don't have to leave the job to get gas) And this is all plus the welder ,hood, leathers  safety glasses face shield , and a first aid kit and a 10# or 20# fire extinguisher. Plus what ever else I forgot.gxbxc
Reply:Insurance, business license and need to know if you are required to be a licensed welder in order to advertise for your welding services.  In Alberta you're supposed to be licensed.
Reply:Does anyone else notice the OP's decent spelling and sentence structure spattered with hillbilly jargon and what appears to be deliberate mis-typing?   Good luck to the OP.  If this were real life, the uncle would ask one of the pros in the trade to tell him what was needed, not ask a self taught nephew who poses as a hick.I could, of course, be wrong.   DanP.S.  Coming from a family from the hills, I just find these posts... wrong.----------------------------Measure twice.  Weld once.  Grind to size.MIG:  Lincoln SP100 TIG/STICK:  AHP Alphatig 200X
Reply:Thanks for being a dick when I was asking for help and advise.  And I been in stock shows since I was 11. I'd appreciate it if you would try to help me instead of just making fun of me. Thanks
Reply:OK lets keep the personal attacks DOWN please...OR ELSE!...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Allow me to rephrase the important part of the post which was in fact advice; To maximize the chances of success, the Uncle (who works in this field and knows the jargon) should ask other professionals with whom he works directly about the necessary tools needed to do the job.    This will eliminate any confusion when a specific tool is required but the young one only remembers the generic name or features.   It will also ensure that he's getting information pertinent to the types of jobs that he will be soliciting for the nephew's talents.  Again, Good luck to the OP.Dan----------------------------Measure twice.  Weld once.  Grind to size.MIG:  Lincoln SP100 TIG/STICK:  AHP Alphatig 200X
Reply:If you wanna be a welder/fabricator all you need is a mess load of tools, some of which you might not use but once on a blue moon. A truck that gets horrible fuel economy. And a raging temper and intimidating personality. those are the welding basics.

Reply:Add to your list:A thick skin, almost everybody who thinks they can get away with it will want to cast aspersions on a "Newby".A good line of credit, when you need something you will need it now, not when you get approval from your Angel Investor.Stamina, enough to get a little more work don each day.Tenacity, to avoid throwing your tools to the ground and walking off the job.And more stuff I have forgotten about.I offer three choices: Good, Fast, & Cheap. Reply:I had to take a young welder aside one day and explain to him why ,he could not be slinging his shield or grinder around the shop when a weld didn't go right . that kid's HF tools never wore out or  broke on there on ,it was usually the wall or floor that did them in. He went and got a job welding dumpsters for s trash company so garbage welding was OK!
Reply:Sticking to your question about which tools you may need... Picture yourself doing one of those proyects at your home shop and figure out which tools you will use. Then consider you are going to need THAT much PLUS whatever is needed to make yourself comfortable. A few days ago, someone suggested getting a canoppy to allow you to work out in the open even if it is raining while staying somewhat dry. Seems usefull also for sunny hot days.Mikel
