Out of Ohio and back to the southwest. Man it's sure nice here. Very enjoyable days working here.
Reply:Are you up in Snowflake or thereabouts?    Nah, the mountains don't look like that!
Reply:Williams area
Reply:Only drove thru a couple times.  Spent lotsa time in Flagstaff and Kingman, but all I know about Williams is that a train to the Grand Canyon departs somewhere near there.  A little weekend trip???
Reply:Ya, there sure is some perty country up there. You doing cut outs or sleeve work?
Reply:Hey specopswelder, I don't remember if your rig is in the rig pic thread. Can we get a bunch of your set up?"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:We are doing sleeves up here. Thought there would be a few cut outs but don't have any. Have a spot that's going to have a 24 foot sleeve that I wish would be a cut out. Lots less welding. Oh wellStickman that's my company rig in the picture. My personal rig is my daily driver now. I still use it when I am home doing work around for some farmers and construction company's. Still trying to decide if the company thing is the way to go. Money is good and steady. ...... On the other hand so was contracting... lm  havin fun with it for now.
Reply:Before I cut the lead reels off. They had way to much interference with the arc. AfterHere is a nice one I saw in Ohio if its you's it's a beauty.
Reply:I'm kinda likin the cylinders behind the cab. It moves more weight to the rear axle, letting the front end last longer. Do they come out of there easily? Any comments on the set up? Yeah, that red Ford is bad arse!!!"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:They come out super easy it's hinged two bolts and set them out . Acetylene is on the other side same set up. Gage's are mounted in the headache rack. Easy to read and adjust. Don't have to worry about breaking them.
Reply:Very cool setup, and once again I enjoy your posts bud! I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:Ahh, I see, you must be doing loaded line sleeves. The pipeline operator must not wanna flare off and purge to do a 24' cut-out. Seems like a hell of a lot of welding for a 24' sleeve. Do they magnaflux/dyepen the whole sleeve then???
Reply:Yeah it would cost hundred of thousands to blow down this line to do a cut out. It all gets mag particle twice. It is alot of welding.  Today it took me and another guy 2 hours to weld two of the girth welds. It's 34 inch pipe. Not toBad. All 7018 .  Then we got rained out so was out making friends around town ha ha. Have a few good places for cold ones and a good time
Reply:Looks like fun being the welder. I was a helper and I hated life. Seems like you know what youre doing!
Reply:Yeah it can be miserable being the helper. Lots of guys treat their helpers like dirt or worse. It's some of the old school pipeliner mentality. That's how they were "motivated" to break out. Just depends who you work for. It is also lots of work. The helper gets all the jobs no one else wants todo. Hopefully no rain today. ...... 85 % chance the radio says. Not good
Reply:Nice looking rigs!Can you educate the uneducated?  Is the purpose of the sleeves to strengthen/"patch" a bad section of pipe?MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Wow. You move around a lot!!!!  Chris
Reply:Yeah a sleeve can be put over bad spots of corrosion and other anomalies. It saves money for the gas company because the can keep the line flowing or hot. They don't have to blow down a 34 inch line in this case. We do tend to travel a fair amount at work. But it's where the money is. Got rained out after only one 7 ft sleeve today. So back to hanging out
Reply:OK, that's what I thought and thanks for the confirmation.Next question - how are these areas discovered with the pipe being buried? Reply:They run a smart pig through em that looks for anomalies. After they are located they are dug up and evaluated. Some just need a re coat or maybe a sleeve. Or cut out.  I don't really know how they work....... I am just the dumb welder go where I am told and weld what they want welded. Ha ha
Reply:Thanks again.  Seems to me I've heard of those "smart pigs".Or at least that pigs are smarter than German Shepherds.  Oh wait . . . not those pigs. Reply:I have heard that about pigs also but my German Shepard is dang smart and good rig security. Ha haWhen he isn't sleeping I. The job

Reply:Now you know why it's so green and why ranchers carry chains year round Enough joking though, thanks for sharing.Think you could post some pics of how your O/A gauges are set up though, thanks.  ( I don't know if I read that wrong earlier, how they were mounted on the headache rack and not on the bottles).Lincoln SA 200Esab Caddy 160Thermal Arc 201TSMiller Dialarc HFI don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around the courtroom....Ill get some pics of the gage set up. Might be Monday before I get them.As for chains I could have used them. The transfer case stripped out. I lost 4x4 completely. ........ Ford problem go figure ha ha. It is nice to see some rain in the southwest. Happy to see some ranch land with some feed on it.Last pic you can barely see one gage next to the acetylene cylinder.
Reply:You all have a great rodeo coming up this weekend that you should take some time out for. Might not be into horses but there's so much other stuff to do there. This is the first year in the last 5 my wife and I haven't been there. Williams is a wonderful city.
Reply:looks like Anvil rock rd.west of Seligman,
Reply:Yeah, its not all just plain desert around here. Take a 2 hour drive and you are in cooler weather.  Arizona has a lot to offer other than 122 degree weather.---No good deed goes unpunished---
Reply:Spec,95% of the time I'm envious of what you do.  The other 5% is the "wet day at work" picI can handle blizzards, heat, and blu-bird days but I don't care for rain.I hope you're at the rodeo jl' is talking about and not laying in a freshly opened trench full of mud.Lincoln SA 200Esab Caddy 160Thermal Arc 201TSMiller Dialarc HFI don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around the courtroom....
Reply:There is a high pressure natural gas transfer line that runs by my property and they have checked it for corrosion with a inspection using a meter and ground probe that checked the electrical emissions from the line. They drilled holes in street crossings so they could check the line every 5 feet with the probe going down into ground contact under the street. From what they said they can detect holes in the protective coating using this method of testing. They have not had to dig any areas of the pipe up in my neighborhood so I don't know if they found any problems. This is a 16" line so they may not be able to run a smart pig down that small a pipe.

Reply:Man thanks. The rodeo would have bean a blast. We finished that job and I made it home. Very happy working around the house for a few days. Got to get the truck fixed up non working 4x4 is not fun. Happy Labor Day to all the hard working people here I. The good ol USA
Reply:Transfer cases and differentials, how "not fun". Good luck. Been there done that many  times but with labor rates at $95 around here anyway, alotta elbow grease and cleanser pays dividends!!!
Reply:Yes it would. But luckily it's my company truck and not my personal rig. Hopefully it's not a total loss. But going off the noise and banging it was making I don't think the prognoses is a good one.
Reply:Those are definitely unique sounds that once you hear them, you never forget them. Good luck. I think I have a half-off coupon for a 5 gal. tub of Goop hand cleaner I can send to you. With out 4X, it usually takes me about 3 gals.;-)
Reply:Do you know carlton he is also a welder for el paso natural gas (aka kinder morgan now). WE may know each other. Josh
Reply:I do know him.Last edited by specopswelder; 09-04-2013 at 06:36 AM.
