What is a "AWS CWI SWRI-1 5 PIECE SET REPLICA WELDING SET" used for?

I found this on a local craigslist site.    I'm not sure just what one would use it for.   It seems the $400 price tag is awful high for 5 welded pieces and a copy of the test.   When I first saw it, my thought was that one could substitute these when applying for a cert.   That would not work, right? Reply:They are for measuring discontinuities and determining if they are allowable by code. It's part of the CWI test. The ones they give you on the CWI test are plastic. It would let you get familiar with measuring undercut and pinholes and such.
Reply:I have seen this ad before and my own "personal" take on the offer is that it is an over-priced scam. I believe that the un-informed individual will bite and waste a lot of hard-earned $$$$. But that's just my personal opinion however. Best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:Well, I wouldn't spend my money on it, but there is a market for it. I knew a welder once that had worked at a company where all he did was weld up coupons with flaws in them for trainee inspectors to practice on.
Reply:Hello TimmyTig, I am not saying that I don't see the need for this sort of thing. I am saying that $400 buckaroos for those samples is certainly over-priced, as you essentially stated. If you want to see "discontinuities" just take a trip over to your local high school or college welding/vocational/skills center etc. and you'll find any number of specimens that you can judge and critique and for a whole lot less money. Reply:Those are from AWS, and can be bought new from AWS.  They cost about $430 new, so there you go.

Reply:When I did my level II UT we used some welded specimens with specific defects, these were bought from a company that specialized in them and cost a fortune.Some guys offered to try and produce some specimens with intentional defects.None of them managed to do it. I mean it is easy to produce a defective weld but if someone asks you to make a weld with sidewall lack of fusion 10mm long at a depth of 3mm from the back of the plate this is when it starts getting tricky.
