So I've been wondering around the internet looking for answers for... well for a few years honestly.  Thought it's time to check with the experts.  To get to the point first, I have a Thermal Arc 400 GMS (multi process like the miller 304 XMT) that I would like to get a wire feeder for.  I have had many mig units over the years and currently have a millermatic 180, it's okay but I think I could have it better.  I purchased the Thermal Arc at a pawn shop about 10 years ago for a steal and have kept it around to use as a power source for my spool gun and also in the hopes of one day learning to tig weld.  A few years ago I inherited a new LN25 and used that with the TA, I loved it.  I'm a hobby welder and don't profess to be any good at it but with that combination I was impressive, well at least to me and my friends.  Silly me though I thought it was a little too much for my needs and knew I could make some money off of it so I sold it on craigslist.  I've gone through a couple more migs since then and just haven't been as happy about them as I was with the TA and LN25 combo.  So what I think I would like to do is go back to a more industrial combination again, sell the millermatic and start using the TA.  I think I have it narrowed down to a few choices.  I don't need it to be portable and it seems I would save money getting a unit that's intended to just be in the shop but I'm also not apposed to it being portable. I'm just not 100% positive this is what I need or if they are even compatible with my machine except for the ln25 of course.  I think my best option is a Miller 22A or 24A then the Miller S22P12 or the ln25.  The thermal arc has a 14 and 17 pin connector which is supposedly compatible with Miller's 14 pin.  I would also like to be able to run 2lb and 10lb spools with this feeder.  I don't know, that requirement right there might make this a short conversation.  My question is am I on the right track here with these choices, I think they will all work with my machine but I'm not positive.  Are there any other feeders out there that I have over looked that might serve me better?  I really appreciate in feedback, Thanks!
Reply:You need to find out how many volts the Thermal Arc puts out for a wire feeder. If it's 24 volt and compatible with a Miller plug then any Miller feeders will work. Did the LN25 to run off arc voltage? 10lb spools aren't a problem but 2lb might be.
Reply:Hello Summiteer, I have the exact machine and I have it married up to a Miller 22A feeder, it is a direct plug and play set-up and you'll love it. It does support the Miller 24volt feeders with the 14 pin plug. You can also directly plug in and operate a Miller 30A spoolgun as long as you are using the WC-24 controller. Best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:Thanks Allan that's good news! Really excited to get that Thermal Arc going again.  I think the 22a will be the one I'll go with.  Any idea if you can run the small 2 lb spools on it.  I'm rethinking my requirement now about that but it'd still be nice.  I live in a small mountain town and the hardware store only stocks 2 lbs.  I was just thinking it'd be handy if it did in case I ever needed to grab on of those in a pinch.  Yes Dave, The LN25 does run off of the arc voltage... that thing was the bees knees!
Reply:I made an adapter to run 2 pound spools . You need a piece of 2" pipe as long as the big spool is wide, a piece of 2" wide flat with a 5/8" hole drilled in it and 5/8" bolt long enough to go thru the flat and the 2 pound spool with length for 2 flat washers a short compression spring and a lock but. You need about 2.5 inches from center of 5-8" hole to the 2" pipe . Tack bolt to the flat, set spring then 1 washer, then spool, then other washer and nut. Weld flat to the pipe so the 2 pound spool sits just ahead of the main center arbor. Hope this makes sense and sorry no pictures.
Reply:It seems like it makes sense.  So the 2" pipe will slide over the 22A's spool mount, Does that get tightened down so it doesn't rotate at all?  Then the 2" flat that's attached to said pipe acts as an arm to carry the 2lb spool on the 5/8" bolt.  I'll have to make sure to build that adapter before I run out of wire Thanks for all the info everyone, I should have just come here first.
Reply:Yes tighten it so it doesn't rock back and forth, you kind of turn it to get the best angle to the drive roll
Reply:Awesome!  Thanks a bunch!  Now to find a good deal on the 22A
