Reply:go with a hard disc....waste of money using a flap discs to remove scale.only thing worse than an ugly woman is an ugly weld
Reply:Cheapest way is let the material get a rust skin under the scale. This can be done by degreasing (simple green is fine) and leaving the metal wet for a day or two.Once a light rust starts, the scale and the rust are both loose and come off easily with a stringer wheel on a grinder. On virgin metal, the stringer wheel will take the scale off, but it is slow. A once over with a hard wheel to break it up followed by the wire wheel is pretty fast and effective.40 grit sandpaper on a DA will do the job and is real cheap, but not real fast. The finish is what you would expect from 40 grit sandpaper.

Reply:You really have to ask this? Get a GRINDING wheel, not a sanding wheel/disk. Then grind the scale off.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:Doesn't anybody tie a rope to it and drag it down the street?Seriously, if pieces are very large, I like sandblasting. Otherwise, the hard disc works for me. If it's tight , does water really get under it that well? I'll have to try that rusting trick.
Reply:http://www.industrydepot.com/AirNeedleScaler01.htm cheap after you buy it.
Reply:These work very well for removing mill scale. They don't remove the parent material like grinding discs, and they don't lose effectiveness like flap discs tend to do.
