I have several questions A) why is my oil filter bracket mounted upside down? B) I just put a new starter on it and it turns over awesome but won't fire which is pissing me off cuz I started it earlier today and worked it and C) is the oil bath supposed to be filled with oil ? Thanks. Oh sh*t and D) when I got it a couple months ago it burned 5/32 in 5th gear real well now it's bogging down in 5th not run in 5/32 very well? Thanks school me...
Reply:A) that's just the way they did them for a few years. You can flip the bracket over but you will need to have new longer lines made. Some say they trap air upside down and need to be flipped, but I can't say for positive. B) ???C) the cup on the bottom of the oil bath comes off to fill it. There is a fill line on the side. I think the book originally said 20wt oil in summer or 10wt oil in winter. I just use 30wt and have no problems. D) dirty fuel filter / carburetor, low compression, high idle speed incorrect?
Reply:Just turn the oil filter over, that's what I did to my 1966. I rather have the crap stay in the bottom of the filter until the next oil change. Reply:We need more info to answer your questions correctly. For instance, you put the starter on, it started earlier today & you worked & now it won't start? Or, you worked it earlier today & then you put the starter on & now it won't start? Do you have fire at the plugs? Look at the commutator & brushes for the welding problem. Brushes move freely, brush holder working right, rusted, junked up? Good shape, wore out, not tracking correctly? While your at it look at the exciter brushes & holders. Free them up, clean them up, stone the commutator & the exciter armature. Take your oil bath apart & wash the filter with a solvent, shake it out & let it dry & clean out the housing, top & bottom. Put new oil in the cup. Put it back together & your good to go for another 50 hrs.Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.                                         -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches

Reply:CEP that's a slick machine you got there.
Reply:Boys I'm thinkin maybe it's my spark plugs I hear people talk of a "gap" I have mine screwed all the way down should I loosen them creating a gap? Gizzardguts I put the starter on and started it up and welded with it then I shut it off and about 90 minutes later when I went to start it it wouldn't fire, it's turning over like a champ with that new starter just won't hit I'm pissed, thanks for yalls input and keep it comin
Reply:The gap referred to for the plugs is .025 & has nothing to do with loosening the spark plug itself. If you have no idea how to gap a spark plug you need to find someone to help you with your machine. While I'm sure there is probably a thread here or in another forum showing the process I don't know where. I'd begin with wires on the starter. Has one come loose? The switch. Are the wires tight? One of the two wires on the switch goes to the magneto. That is the kill wire. Disconnect it & see if it starts, making sure the end of the wire is NOT touching anything. Do you know how to check for fire at the spark plugs?Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.                                         -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches
Reply:Bad coil in mag.
Reply:Yea I know how to check for fire, I'll start with the ignition wires one of them is spliced so could be that, when I was turning it off yesterday (when it would start) it took about 10 seconds for it to completely shut down
Reply:Have you had this problem John
