Hi tryng to weld some exhaust stud holes on a vw head that have been stripped taped and restriped, so I can redrill and tap them. cant find any mig nozzles smaller than a 3\8 taper. Iim dumbfounded. with .035 wire you should be able to go smaller than 3\8  right. was just trying to reach out before I fab something up that I can weasle in there and still flow gas. if anyone knows where you can get a 1\4 taper nozzle or smaller would be great. thanks.
Reply:Flux core.  Can't get smaller than the contact tip.
Reply:Im doing aluminum mig on these. I have not been able to find a decent set of tapered nozzles. the smallest I could find went down to 3\8 taper which I might get away with but I want some security since the heads are expensive. cant be too cautious about these things.
Reply:If it's aluminum find someone good with TIG.

Reply:In tight spaces, I've been known the trim the nozzle back some and up the flow rate a smidge...
Reply:I've got more questions than answers.1. What kind of VW head are we talking about?  Type one/three  Type2  Water pumper?  2. How big did the previous failed attempt auger the holes out?  How deep did they oversize the holes?3. Are you competent to do the repair?  I've done my fair share of VW work in the past.  The alloys in the heads aren't exactly run of the mill stuff and that is going to determine your filler requirements.  I'll have to agree with WelderDave on this one.  Pack em up and send them to someone like CastWeld or Zapster that have the knowledge and capabilities to do the repair correctly and re-drill the stud hole in the correct location.JMHO, YMMVRogerOld, Tired, and GRUMPYSalesman will call, Batteries not included, Assembly is required, and FREE ADVICE IS WORTH EXACTLY WHAT YOU PAY FOR IT!Dial Arc 250HFThunderbolt 225 AC/DCAssorted A/O torches
Reply:Filling a stripped out hole with welding filler wastes everybody's time. Machining it afterwards is an exercise in frustration and broken taps.Look into "Time Serts" or similar product.A couple of bucks spent will result in a better repair with much less time spent.Be wary of The Numbers: Figures don't lie,. but liars can figure.Welders:2008 Lincoln 140 GMAW&FCAW2012 HF 165 'toy' GTAW&SMAW1970's Cobbled together O/A

Reply:Also, i think there is a product called Case Saver for that application.
Reply:I've used some of the aluminum brazing rods for similar issues, as long as you can get the grease out of the hole and get the casting hot enough to melt the rod, it bonds well and is stronger than the aluminum your fixing, machines easy and is pretty dummy proof. Not sure how it would work on a head but it might be worth a try.
Reply:Have you tried looking online Andyauto ? You might be able to extend a flux core nozzle.
