Reply:a one time flash of short duration should not cause "arc-eye" in my considered non medical opinion.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:it takes a decent amount of exposure over the course of a day to get "arc flash" I've seen a coworker take about 5 minutes over the course of a day and call out sick the next day, and i've had a decent deal of exposure over the course of a day +/- 5 minutes, and havent had it yet (knock on wood)Miller Spoolmate 200 w/t S-52 WirefeederMM 211'09 Miller Trailblazer 302
Reply:It would be unlikely but could happen under some circumstances. If you were welding in a mechanical room surrounded by shinny sheet metal big duct work. It could flash off the duct work behind you and then reflect off your eyeglasses. A buddy had it happen but it was his fault for not looking over the welding location and his position. All he had to do is move the welding screen.
Reply:Slim to none. I get hit everyday from my co workers. Even when I get myself occassionaley I will stare at a bright light for a while and then jump right back into welding something. I'm not a Dr. but it does something to help the eyes re dialate and go back to normal.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:In the 1970s I got hit bad one Friday. My partner and I were running 3/32” dual shield, at 400 + amps side by side. I could see the light from his arc out the side of my hood, but didn't think anything of it. About midnight the wife had to take me to the emergency room. By Tuesday she could pull sheets of skin off the side of my face.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:In shop class I would get flashed a few times daily, and stick the rod and flash myself a few times.I wear glasses and have never had arc eye and never want it.

Reply:farmwelderYou may be attributing two distinct phenomenon into one causality. For lack of proper medical terminology: I'll call one an Optic-Flash, momentary blindness - and the second, a Flash-Burn, the sand in the eye feel. The first you usually get from yourself as a result of a split-second fumble of a hood flip, lead snag, or a surprise from a co-worker. Instantly all you cansee is the big-white-light we all know. The retina is the interior lining of the eye which transmits optic message to the brain; it has been over stimulated, and simply requires sometime to normalize. Repeated intense Optic-Flashes have been associated with retinal detachment, and the incident is slightly higher in near-sighted individuals [glasses]. All we can do is to be careful.A Flash-Burn: the sand in the eyes pain which is so celebrated, occurs when the sclera - the white outer wall of the eye - gets sunburned. Unless you have painted the inside of your hood silver and placed a mirror behind you while welding you cannot get this from yourself. A Flash-Burn occurs from prolonged exposure to indirect, oblique light, typically from the welding going on around you. Prolonged-exposure translates to the vectors intensity.  Portable welding shieldsare the simplest prevention. Opus
