Reply:Post your general location in User CP so that people close to you can offer you help. I run across them occasionally also. I believe I have one stashed under my bench for just such a project. Reply:Check out any car or truck repair shop. If your looking for the fairly large type, look for a truck/bus repair facility.
Reply:Why not an atmospheric gas forge? They are cleaner and you can always get propane. Coal is sometimes hard to find.. I am in the midst if making one that I saw as an example online. I have to get off my rear and finish it. This will be the second gas forge I have made and they can be done cheap and quick or good.
Reply:I had no idea fire cement was so expensive!  do you line the inside of the drum with anything to keep it from sucking away all the heat?miller syncrowave 250hobart handler 140home made 400 amp engine driven in progress...
Reply:Just stop by a truck shop, if you want really big drums, find a place that works on semi's and dump trucks, I'm sure they'd be happy to let you walk away with a used drum, at most it shouldn't cost ya more than a couple bucks being that scrap is less than 10 cents a pound
Reply:If you want to line a drum or other container, you can use fire clay, sometimes called mortar clay.  About $8. for 50 pounds.http://www.lowes.com/pd_10367-13040-10367_0__"USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:I checked with my local Lowes, and apparently they don't carry the fire clay.  Seems like it's a regional thing (mine is in California).  I did find a local ceramics place that has all kinds of clay, though at slightly higher prices. I may contact them to see if they have floor sweepings and busted bags.  It's not like I'm going to make pots with it."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:Google Refractory CementThe BORG won't carry it simply because there is no mass market for it.Hey~!! It's a hobby. It's not supposed to make sense~!!
Reply:My buddy has a drum full of heavy truck ones that would be perfect, what is your location?Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
