Hi I'm a new member  and was wondering how long did it take any of ye pipe welders to get on a pipeline job after ye  finished weld school and test pieces passed?  I'm into my second week of weld school tomorrow , is there any major pipe welding jobs kicking off any around the world.?
Reply:There's still hope the Keystone XL will go ahead. Are you just learning welding in general or taking a pipe welding course? If you're just learning welding in general, it will be a few years before you could be welding on a pipeline. Are you wanting to run your own rig or work for a pipeline contractor? Either way you need to be talking to the pipeline contractors or oil companies doing the pipeline. A lot of times they hire guys with rigs but you don't just get out of school and get a job welding pipeline unless you know somebody hire up. I think you could get on as helper/assistant and then work your way up to doing the welding.
Reply:Thanks for your reply dave, im on a pipe welding course here in Ireland ,iv welded a few stainless pipes sch 10 that have passed Xray , I haven't been welding any pipes with 6010, 6011, and 7018 till now , would love to work in usa for a while for some experience , working for a contractor  would be better for me ,ya even as a helper would  be ok to get experience  see how they do it, ill try upload  pics of the welding iv done in training,  oh and what type of rod do they use for the vertical  down.thanks dave

Reply:I truly hope they do better in Europe than they do here.Big pipeline break to the North.........somewhere in Wyoming or Montanna..............didn't pay too close attention to the news.Accidents waiting to happen across private property, affecting public drinking water, and public lands.  Not to mention destroying good crop land.  For some reason they let the pipeline companies use eminent domain to cross our property with their pipelines.  PRIVATE COMPANIES MAKING PRIVATE PROFITS, GUARANTEED ACCESSS TO PRIVATE LAND BY THE GOVERNMENT.  Last I heard, this wasn't Russia  Least it wasn't until now."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Your welds are coming along but look a little cold. Downhand is mostly done with 6010 or higher XX10 rods. There are some new 7048 rods for doing downhand/downhill pipe welding but I don't think they're very common yet at least in Alberta where they apparently have a reputation as the best pipe welders in the world. I've seen some unbelievable pipe welders but I think there's just as good of pipe welders in other places too. Maybe there's just more demand for pipe welders in Alberta so naturally you have a lot of really good pipe welders. As far as pipeline standards, they're really starting to crack down on making sure all welds are properly inspected on Canadian pipelines. I was watching or reading something about some pipeline companies not doing 100 x-ray on all welds in order to save money. Even the best welder on the planet will occasionally have a flaw that needs repairing. There was big controversy about inspections when the Alaska pipeline was built and I think they went back and re-inspected a lot of the welds.
