I just passed out of my 6010 flat plate test. I am now moving on to 7018 T's and need advise . I am welding horizontally witch so far proves to be easy , But anyone with advise I would be thankful. Also what size 7018 rod should I be using nccer did not specify .

Reply:Hello t-lang, I would suggest 1/8", but if you have other diameters available I would further suggest trying all of them. Also plan on making single pass welds and multi-pass welds, as thickness and condition might dictate using various diameters in differing layer configurations. I am going to include a sketch that essentially shows a 3-pass stack on a lap joint, this same weld could be applied to a T/fillet and would utilize similar rod angles and placements. Single pass, 45 degree rod angle with rod pointed at the apex of the vertical and flat plates. When going with a 3-pass configuration apply the first pass the same way as a single-pass T, the next pass at roughly 50 degrees up from the bottom plate and the rod centered slightly above the toe of the first bead. The 3rd pass on this weld with the rod at roughly a 40 degree angle from the bottom plate and centered between the upper toe of the first pass and the upper toe of the second pass. Descriptions can often be misleading and misunderstood so I'll try to include a sketch that should at least give you some idea of what I am referring to in my info. from above. Look for other suggestions from other folks on the forum here and remember: there is more than one way to skin a cat and if the end result meets the expectation it really doesn't matter how you get there a lot of the time. Good luck and best regards, Allan Attached Imagesaevald
Reply:I would use Esab's Atom-Arc 7018 (3/32) just personal preference.  Espically if there is no limit on stringers.  I just find it easier for people learning.  Good luck whichever path you choose, just keep practicing and practicing.  Congrats on passing the 6010, personally once you get that machine dialed in to the right amperage I think you'll do great on (7018).................
Reply:my t joint test has to include 6 passes
Reply:If you need to go 6 passes just follow my diagram for the 3-pass weld and start the 4th pass with the rod slightly above the toe of the bottom bead and the rod at a 50 degree angle, then apply another bead with the rod centered on the top toe of the 4th pass at a 45 degree angle and finish off with the rod centered between the top toe of the 5th pass and the top toe of the underlying 3rd pass and the rod angle at 40 degrees. That'll get you a 6-pass fillet weld and if you have applied the underlying beads correctly the toes of the overall fillet will be equal and the face will be relatively flat without valleys or excessive convexity. Good luck and best regards, Allanaevald
