I heard you can stick weld cast iron with stainless. Is that right?
Reply:Never heard that one. You can stick weld it with 7018 and nickel rod with appropriate pre and post heating and peening.I believe you can use SS rod to tig it with, but all I've read says that OA welding it is superior, because the heat is much more diffuse.Use the search function. There are countless threads on welding CI.Last edited by Drf255; 07-04-2013 at 05:41 AM.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:I repaired a vise at an old job with 309 stick rods, heat the piss out of what your working on, grind out the offending area, weld, post heat/peen, let slow cool. The vise came out fine after I was done, and proceeded to be abused as soon as it was back together.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:308 wire will work in a cold weld application. Look up yorkiepap.
Reply:I used 309 on some cast iron and the weld came out exxxxxxxxxxxtremely hard. Doesn't want to grind either.
Reply:I have stainless but will have to wait for nickel. Any certain number of nickel the best to use for cast.?
Reply:About 25 years ago I worked in an automotive machine shop. Certain racing applications required us to weld up cylinder heads in order to reshape the chambers and ports. Stainless arc welding rod produced a much superior weld (with less cracking) as compared with nickel rod. You still had to heat the cast iron and stress relieve it, but the stainless rod was much more forgiving when welding and tended to crack less than nickel rod. |
