Place i work at has a fleet of trucks with alum bodies. Sometimes light brackets, steps door hinges break/ crack from use/ abuse. What process do you recommend to use to repair them? I can decently tig weld alum but have zero experience working on non new/ dirty material. I have borrowed my friends spool gun attachment for the first time using a millermatic 211 and it was really odd to use, burnt really fast and was really hard to get a decent run. (i passed a 3g mig test on steel) I cleaned the metal with a new ss brush and wiped with acetone. I couldn't imagine doing an uphill bead with it. any suggestions?
Reply:I repair a lot of grain chutes, steps, flap mounts etc on trucks with my spool gun. I just use a 24 grit disc, (short lifespan) and don't really dig into the metal to make it stringy. After cleaning with air and lacquer thinner it's just welded up. This kind of work doesn't need to be pretty, just functional. Now it's always fun to carve out someone else's goobers but that's a whole nuther story where a rasp, burrs, and plasma come into play.SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....
Reply:Alum mig with a spoolgun is always how we did it. Note that the settings for alum mig are way different than steel, and you have to push the bead and weld at a much faster pace than with steel wire..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Constant breakage on these things, a real PITA, good for carrying bark, maybe. If they must build the boxes of aluminum, at least they should weld doublers wherever they mount the hinges, etc., and bolt on steel hinges. You can call the manufacturer, but you are unlikely to get anyone who actually KNOWS what alloy was used to make the body and the attachments, though you'll eventually get an OPINION on what wire to use for repairs. |
