Hi Welders et al,I have a quick question.  Can you use a MIG machine as a stick welder ????   Just open up the door, bolt my leads on correctly, disable the wire feed etc and boom away we go.Any problems ????WWoWthanks guys

Reply:I'm assuming your welder is a mig only machine and not a 3 in one multi process unit.Google (and read up on) constant current/variable voltage weldersAnd, constant voltage/variable current welders. You will find your answer and learn a thing or two about welding power supplies.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:The output voltages are similar. The difference come after the transformer and rectifier bank...DC Arc Welder => in series arc stabilizer (choke, iron-core-coil, inductor) = Constant CurrentDC Mig Welder => in series arc stabilizer (choke, iron-core-coil, inductor) followed by an in parallel capacitor = Constant VoltageIf you add a switch to switch the capacitor out/in you can change from Constant Current to Constant Voltage. Northern Industrial Welders makes such a Hybrid MIG/Stick welder http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...5145_200485145The only question is will you have enough output voltage to maintain an arc.  Without the capacitor across the output (after the series choke), the output voltage will be lower.  Best to simply try it before doing any modifications like adding a switch.  You may have to open the case, detach one wire from a terminal on the capacitor (wrap it with tape) and give it a try - like you said, "open up the door, bolt my leads on correctly, disable the wire feed etc and boom away we go."You need a minimum of about 20 volts (under load) to arc weld.  Since you would need to measure that under load anyway, skip it, just go ahead and try it.  The current dial adjustment on the welder (e.g. the A B, C, D or E selector on a Lincoln MIG PAK - not the wire speed control) is used to change the transformer output taps = transformer output voltage.  You may find that the modification works only on the higher voltage settings.I always wanted to try this... but you know how things go...
