I have a friend who wants to learn to weld. He has spotted a millermatic 130XP machine, used, supposed to get a deal on it etc. I am not familiar with this machine, although I told him it was probably a little small and would pigeon hole him in a short time. He is another sparky and was mainly wanting to learn on some 1/8 inch angle making shelving brackets, and the like. Does anyone have any experience with this machine? Flux core I assume, and is it cable of using gas? Also, I was curious of its limitations, and what would be a reasonable price for it used in good condition? Thanks for any help.Millermatic 252"Don't worry, he's got a welder, he can fix anything"
Reply:I have one. It is a fairly decent machine, Miller made reliable. I will weld up to 1/4" with it, but only for orny stuff. I think they are around 600 bucks new so ya gotta look at the mileage on it. A fairly decent one could go for 3-400 bucks...prolly down to 150-200...I paid 400 for mine couple of years ago but I knew when it was bought and it hadnt even had a pound of wire thru it yet....It will handle both F/C and gas, if it has the correct parts on it. Heavy little beast, but it'll last for years if you dont drag it around by the stinger...First one I had went for 6 years, doing mostly field work, and it did not get babied...
